  • HUGE!!!!! Backfire

While driving, my battery started going dead...so dead that the radio quit working and next the engine started shutting off and coming back on. I barely made it to the next exit but as the engine was cutting in and out it was also backfiring a lot too. There was one backfire in particular that sounded like 5 shotguns going off at once it was so loud. I replaced the alternator and batter but now the exhaust sounds like theres no muffler, its very loud..however, the engine still has good power and runs good. Can a backfire blow out a muffler?

    btw...this is a 1987 Camaro RS (305 tpi)

Oh yeah, it can split it clean in half. If your muffler is still in one piece and you can't find an obvious spot in the pipe check on the top part of the pipe that runs over the axle.

On older cars with mechanical fuel pumps, we would shut the car down while it was still moving so the crank would still 'pump' the fuel pump and it would start to fill the muffler with gas. Click, click...BOOM! We were bored back in those days.
