• Swapping from 2.8 to 3.4 ???'s

K, I still got my 82' 2.8, which I miss terribly. :(
It was carbed, and lived for 19 years(dec 01') till the engine died and shot the crank out through the oil pan and destroyed the trans. I upgraded to a 350, in the process my 2.8 trans and engine got stolen.
Well now I have sold the 350 and the car is all alone and engineless.
I really want to put another 2.8, but make it a mpfi or a 3.4
How easy is the swap? My car was carbed, does it make a difference in the installation?

3.4 slowtogo, Jerriko, you guys seem to know your stuff w/ this can you give advice?
Thanks in advance
Niño

they still have everything, and would be a bytcing swap!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IF you get this, you'd just need an electronic speedo

also, over at thirdgen.org, V6 section, a guy named Dale (same dud e I sold my 3.4 to) did the full 3.4 sfi into an s_10 showtruck.

SOB!!!
THAT IS CHEAP!

I think I'll go look over at thirdgen.org
I already have the 3.4 just kinda iffy about doing this.
Can you keep the 3rd gen speedo or upgrade to the 140 mph one and still use the electronic speedo?
Thanks Nate!

I upgraded to teh 120 sapeedo, I think that's the highest a 6 car went up to. my old 85 gauge only went up to 85 ( & was speedo driven), but then you could easily bury it ;)

oh yeah, the 120 ralley gauge cluster I have, from an 88 is full vss, which is compatible w/the pulses from the 4th gen VSS

If you go to mpfi, you will need the ecm also. I didn't see it mentioned. But that really about covers it. Have fun! It's a piece of cake (as long as it stays stock, ).

Control module for the coils right?
Ok I'll admit it I don't know much about carbed vehicles. :(
So how about the fuel pump? (I know it's a stupid question) Does it have one in the backseat too? (sorry)
Oh yeah about the driveshaft, would it need a 3rd or 4th gen?

Thanks

the 3.4 I linked to is supposed to have everyting. The driveshaft is the same for 3rd & 4th gens. FP, yes, you'll need an 85+ fp. Might as well swap in one of those fangled 4th gen plastic ones while you're at it ;)

if you want, keep the 3.4 long block, keep the carb, & find another one of these to slap on top. Fageol also makes these s/c for the 60* carb/tbi applications.

Actually, now that you bring this up. Can I upgrade to the 3.4 yet keep the car carbed? Will it lose any hp being carbed? Or is it better to run it mpfi?

Thanx

IF you want it to look stock/sleeper, do a long block swap. It will also be easier than the sfi conversion. In the GMPP catalog, the 3.4 H.O. is "only for S-10 carbed" versions, not certified for tbi

Keep it carbed, with the right cam you will make MORE power than fuel injected (and the right carb of course). Thing is, you need to know someone who knows alot about carburetion to make good power. I was told that If I had a carb setup, I could get close to 300 hp with my current motor/cam combo (The guy who told me builds race motors for a,living and is the best carb man in Houston Bar none.)

Hmmm, thanks for telling me what I wanted to hear! :D
I didn't want to go through all the trouble to go fuel injected. Was hoping that there wasn't gonna be much of a difference between the both. Thanks guys! I'll hopefully tackle this project in a few months.
