  • Rear oil seal and stock airbox

    Two questions, the first, I asked in the Gen. Tech section, but it's kinda' busy in there, plus this pertains more to the 3rd gen bodies. A.) How hard would it be to replace the rear oil seal on a 3.1L V6, and B.) for the few of you who may still have the stock airbox in your 3.1L V6's, on the round cannister, there's something plugged into the cannister. What is that? I apologize, 'cuz I know these may be dumb questions, but I wanna' learn, and how else, but to ask questions.

    That is the Oxygen sensor. If you plan installing a cold air intake, don't forget to drill a hole in it so you can insert the sensor in the new intake.

    Don't worry about it, it's not a dumb question, that's what this board it for. If you would have asked me the last question before I installed my CAI, I wouldn't have known the answer either.

      the thing in the air box is the air temp sensor, the o2 is in the exhaust pipe right behind the T-connection.

      edit: dammmit, this procedure is for 84 models
      according to haynes:
      1. remove oil pan & pump (see previos sections for full details)
      2. remove cap
      3. pry lower half of seal from bearing
      4. to remove upper half, use punch & hammer to roll seal around ****DO NOT hit crankshaft****
      5. remove all sealant & foriegn material
      6. apply rtv sealant to outer surface of NEW seal **DO NOT get sealant on crank side of seal*****
      7. use installation tool to guide new seal into place
      8. istall big lipp front engine, little lipp rear
      9. rtv the lower seal& install on lower cap
      10. tighten & torque to spec
      11. re-install pump & pan.

      edit: for 85 & up, "REMOVE TRANSMISSION"is a step beacause we have a 1 piece rear main.

          Okay, the O2 sensor/air-temp sensor........either way, all you have to do is drill a hole for it to go in?? And the rear seal--'85 and up has to drop the tranny??? If so. . .d**n!!!

            i meant to add in there, that i figured the O2 sensor was more around the exhaust system, 'cuz that's the way it is on most cars, no matter what.

              oops, sorry about that. I have heard the sensor that goes in the airbox being called the oxygen sensor on this board and others, but upon closer research, 2.8 is right.
