Transformer probably shorted on one of the power poles. I've seen one go before at night. It'll just spark and burn up for a few seconds bright as day, then boom, fuse blows and back to darkness. Plus if you were close enough, there was enough energy to F with his ignition. Kinda crazy you were that close. I watched a video in my power systems class of a transformer shorting out, the fuse didn't blow and the gutters on the nearby house became energized and started arcing, almost burning the house down.
