  • Time to rebuild my calipers?

Alright, so since I replaced my brakes (and a little before) I've had problems keeping my front rotors from warping. Like 5-7k miles and they're significantly warped. I replaced pads/rotors about 2k ago, and now my front have black spots. I'm assuming this is a heat distribution issue, so I lifted it up and tried to spin the front wheels, and I have to crank on em pretty hard. This leads me to believe the pistons in my front calipers are sticking.. pics below.

Wow. Your rotors are toasted. Typical of crappy OE rotors which have been run hard.

I bet if you measure them, they'll not be warped.

Those black spots are either cementite deposits ("hard spots") or brake pad material which has transfered to the metal of the rotor. Either way, as the rotor turns and those areas sweep under the pads, the friction coefficient changes.

That rapid change in friction generates a rapid change in braking...a rapid fluctuation in the rate of deceleration.

Most people perceive that as warped rotors.

The rotors are ~2k miles old... I don't drive THAT hard either. 9/10 of my miles are highway/interstate. And the spots are the same feel and such as the rest of the rotor, but I can feel what you're talking about in the pedal. But none of the answers why the front wheels are under so much strain even just sitting there.

When was the last time you greased the PAB pins?

Pad Abutment Bracket - what is bolted to the spindle. The caliper slides on two guide pins into the bracket. They need to be greased or the caliper DOES NOT slide in and out as it should. The PAB has little rubber boots to keep the grease in and clean.

You also want to replace the abutment clips when you replace the pads too.

That helps the calipers release? O.o
