  • I have a question about my sub and amp.

I have a question about my sub and amp. I’m not running the amp that I orangey planed on running with was an Alpine. Because the Alpine amp was messed up I’m forced to run a Punch 120 amp. Now my question is what is the best way to hook this up? I’m running a Sony x-plod 52 watt head unit, a subtump stealth box, with a 10” Alpine type “R” 1500 watt sub. Now I already have it bridged to the positive speaker terminals. Now the sub is capable to handle 2 ohm power. I have it wired now for 4 ohm power. Should I switch it over to 2 ohm or keep it at 4 ohm? If I want it 2 ohm should I keep it bridged? I plan on getting a better amp when I can get the money to. But for now this is going to have to do. The amp sounds ok for now but it’s old and kind of crapy. Any info about new amps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all for your help

Ok, we have a couple issues here. First, you cannot wire the Type-R for 4 ohms then 2 ohms. There is a mis-communication somewhere. What is the exact model number of the sub? SWR-1042D? Next, is this the amp you're using?

Ok the sub you can wire up for either 4 ohms or 2 ohms depending on where you set the jumpers I guess.... It's a duel voice coil. Yes it is the SWR-1042D. Also the amp that I'm running for now is the same one that's in the pic only a model or two older then that one... Like I said it's an old amp. I plan on getting 2 MTX amps that someone is selling here. But for now how would be the best way to wire this system up??? Also correct me if I'm wrong but to "bridge" this amp I would have to run on one the negative side of one channel and the other goes on the positive side of the other channel right? I used to know all of this and be good at it lol I have been out of it for some time now and starting to get back into it again.

      Thanks for your reply

Re: I have a question about my sub and amp.

Your subwoofer has dual 4 ohm voice coils. Meaning you can wire them in parallel for a 2 ohm load or in series for an 8 ohm load. See link:
        http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=161

Now then, most every amp is not completely stable at loads under 4 ohms when bridged. You can wire it a 2 ohms if you like, but your amp will probably kick in protection once it heats up. If the amp doesn't have thermal protection or it fails to trip for whatever reason, you very well may smoke it.

Well like I said it's a old amp and doesn't sound that good. There is someone on the board that has 2 MTX amps that he wants to sell. How would you suggest that I wire it? Like I said I used to know this but it's been a while. I'm planning on getting the best power out of it as possible. The amps are mtx 6500d that I will be getting along with my alpine type "R" 10" sub and a sony x-plode 52 watt head unit. Any info how I should wire that would be awsome.....even better a pic would be great! lolol

          thanks again

Re: I have a question about my sub and amp.

I guess my next question is, On my sub I have 2 sets of contacts, I want to jumper the 2 positives together and the 2 negatives together. Then on my amp it's a 2 channel amp. So do I want to take one of my speaker wires and put it on the negative terminal of one channel and then take my positive speaker wire and put it on the positive side of the other channel? Is that right?

That is how you wire your subwoofer for a 2 ohm load and bridge the amp. But read what I previously posted.

Next, so you're buying TWO 6500d's? Why? You won't be able to push any more power to your single Type-R with two 6500d's over just one.

Oh and here's how you wire the type-r to one 6500:

PS... I see he's askin $100 a piece. Like I said, you only need one to power that thing a plenty. $100 shipped is a fine price. Easily take that over the Kenwood. IMHO.

For $200.00 bucks it's like buying 2 amps for the price of one. :) Also thanks for your reply

If you want both, fine. But you will only be able to use one to power that 10". Maybe get another matching SWR-1042D in the passenger side stealth box and power it off the second amp?
