  • Good replacement for speakers in backseat?

I've got the "monsoon" system, but I really need to replace the two speakers in the backseat because they are taking a beating from my new headunit. Any ideas? What size are those anyway, 4"?

The speakers in your backseat are the same size as the ones in the door..6.5". The ones in the hatch are 4". If you plan on keeping the monsoon system and are not getting another external amp then you pretty much will want to stick with midrange speakers or even woofers. Your stock speakers back there do not play highs through them. Some people will tell you that you should just get some coaxial speakers back there but in my opinion coax does not sound good. You actually only need the door speakers to put out your highs. That said, I have heard nothing but good responses from the Kicker F6.5c's. These are actually sub woofers and they're 6.5" which means perfect fit. The "F" stands for free-air which means these subs are not to be used in a box. This makes them perfect for our cars since the space behind the speakers is not enclosed. The only problem though is Kicker "supposedly" does not put these out anymore but I have been told that some authorized dealers can get them. There has not been a lot of demand for the free-air subs since most people put their subs in a box. I have searched high and low for these subs and was only able to find a guy on www.sounddomain.com that was selling two of the F6.5c's because the rest of his system had been stolen. So basically your only choice is to check around on eBay or other classified sites. The only other free air sub that are 6.5" that I know of are by Image Dynamics. Heres a link: http://www.imagedynamicsusa.com/products/midbass.html

The only other problem with going with aftermarket mid-bass speakers is they can handle a LOT of power. And they also need a lot of power to perform well. This is a problem if you plan on staying with the stock monsoon system. The amp in the stock system is crap. It will never give you enough power to push these. Your best bet is to add an external amp then push the mid-bass subs with that. Then later if you decide to upgrade the doors speakers you can also hook those up to the amp (if you get a 4-channel). This is basically what I have done. The Kicker F6.5c's Im getting are in the mail now so I dont have them hooked up yet but I have heard these in a 98 Z28 and they are BAD!!

I didnt mean to write a novel here but hopefully this will give you some example of where to go with your situation. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I wouldn't even change the 4 inch speakers near the trunk. I don't like to have treble coming from the back. I want the highs up front. You could adjust the fade so the rear speakers are softer...

I'd just use the back speakers as a fill-in.

Free-air subs are great! You should have 6.5 inch speakers by the back seats. You could put the free-air subs there.

Are you considering subwoofers in the back? If you want to save space, I know www.jlaudio.com has a stealth box that fits a single 10 in the driver's side of the trunk hatch(that tiny space).
