• Can someone help the new guy??

Hi, I have a 97 camaro with the factory cd player, and wanted to know if it is possible to put a steering wheel in out of a newer camaro with the radio controls and make it functional. Please let me know. Thank you.

I've been toying with the 4th generation camaros for almost 3 years now and I've never heard this question before. Another one that I haven't heard that I've always wondered about is if the 97+ dash will fit in pre 97's for that updated look. This is a good question, and personally, I think it would work fine but may cost you quite a bit because of the air bag system. However, I've never shopped for new steering wheels so....

I'm sure somebody would have to know... keep up with the research and let us know what you find. Some mods/upgrades are just a little harder then others to find info on - we've all been there I'm sure

      Have fun

You would need the wheel, of course. You'll also need the harness from wheel to the back of the radio, and on top of that, you might need a radio equipped to handle that option. I don't know if they are pre-made to handle steering wheel controls.

The biggest problem, like Palmer said, is going to be the airbag. Your cheapest option will be trying to get a steereing wheel with controls out of a wrecked car with that option. You can then switch your undeployed airbag into the other wheel.

HOWEVER, I do not know what's involved with unhooking the airbag system. I know the basics are unhooking the battery and then either waiting a certain amount of time, or purging some sort of back up power source for the airbag system. Once you're certain is has no power there shouldn't be a high risk of it blowing.

Changing the wheel out itself shouldn't be that hard. Take of some panels, unbolt, pull out. Getting it back on will be harder. I took off the steering wheel in my moms Taurus with no problems. I needed just a basic phillips screwdriver and a ratchet with long-neck sockets.

Go pick up a Haynes or Chilton's manual and it should outline both unpowering the airbag and changing the wheel.

You can also get a harness to make the steering wheel controls with with an aftermarket head unit. I think there's one made by PAC.
