• Help designing a system:

I have a monsoon system right now in my 02 bird... and looking to change out most of the system. Only one of the speakers is blown, driver side sub, but I'm going to replace both.

What's a good replacement for that? (W/o too much modification to make another sub fit in the same space)

I'm going to get subthumps boxes, driverside and passenger side with their amp rack. I'm thinking about 1 10w3v2 on each side. Good choice? How will that sound?

What's a good amp?

Also, what DIN are our headunits? It looks 1.5 to me, but I could be wrong. Going to get an in dash DVD, most likely pioneer (alpine isn't impressing me much these days). Anyone suggest an in dash dvd system?

Ya its a 1.5 din, but no sense in buying a 1.5din most of them arn't too great anyways.

Yes those subs will sound great in those boxes, and as far as an amp how much do you feel like spending? If you want it to match get a JL 500/1...

If you replace the deck and replace your speakers, do you plan on adding an amp to the mains or not? And what kinda sound do you want, how loud do you play it, and how much do you feel like spending.

Few things to think about, let me know, I'll give you some good ideas, and any other info I can help you out with.

Personally I'm using 4 Mb quart 10's with a Rockford Type RF X6 850 watt sub amp, and an A/D/S 4 channel giving 60 watts to each main, which for now are mb quart reference components front and back. With a clarion pro audio cd deck.

JL 500/1 is in my price range.. I'm thinking about spending maybe $1000 on components (w/o head unit) and maybe another 1000 on the headunit alone. not really sure at this point though. I could go a little higher.

What sounds better, passenger/driver enclosures or the other subthump enclosure?

The top mounted rear box sounds the best because it fires the subs forward through the car. But the stealth boxes also sound good and nice if you want to keep the room in the back. And it keeps your factory t-top holders wide open, thats why I used them.

Sounds like you want to go pretty high end here and get some good clean sound, take a look at CDT Audio, JL, Mb Quart, Eclipse, Focal, these are all pretty high end good clean sounding compontent speakers, match them front to back if you want the most universal sound.

Personally off what you are looking at I would probably pickup the JL compontents because they match the subs, and I just like doing that, plus they do sound great.

I would say for amps run a 500/1 and a 300/4 that would give you nice clean full power. Don't overlook a little sound dampening of course.

Cd Dvd?

Ohh just noticed DVD system, I would recomend against Pioneer as much as I do respect them for the high end stuff you are using. I fully understand about Alpine really sucks what they did... Clarion and Eclipse make really nice units that blow away the pioneer but will cost a bit more, worth a look though, if they seem a little pricy i would get the pioneer before about anything else such as kenwood or jensen, sony ect...

eclipse is nice, but all their new stuff seems to be dual din, and clarion has always been my favorite, but pioneer just seems like it'd be better for me. I forgot to add on my first post, I wanted in dash navigation. If we were double dim, it'd make everything so much damn easier!

Then keeping with JL, what speakers fit int he rest of the system?

Standard 6.5" or oversize 6.5" speakers will fit front and back. The regular 6.5" you might have to tap new screws for them, but a not a big deal, if you get a set with the adapeter ring, that works fine also.

Ya I see now if its NAV also the Pioneer is the way to go to stay under $3000

alright, went shopping today.

Bought the subthump boxes, amp rack, JL 500/1 amp, 10w3v2, AVIC-N2 head unit, and then I'm just going to pick up the rest when I do the install locally.

That should give me a decent result, right?

Also, how much space (inch wise) will I have left over, since it's only 1 din... enough to mount a valentine1 in dash?

Sounds good wish I could hear it.. Yes I think you will enjoy that greatly, the subs stay really nice and clean in those boxes, JL's are good at tight space so works great.

Um I can't remember for sure I think single din is like 1.5" so about 3/4" or so, as long as you get a dash kit with an open pocket so You can mount something in there, unless you plan on making one or having a custom shop do it.

Have you used the Valentine1 before? I hear good things about it and then I hear bad things about it so, I have been sticking with Escort and Bell for all these years.

1200 watt rockford? you mean max power right? Don't think they ever made a 1200rms, 1000 and 1500 but I don't know of a 1200. Either way what is the model and year is the amp? If its when rockford started dropping off you might want to consider a new sub amp depending because RF lost thier SQ on thier amps, and with JL subs you really want to keep it, they get so nice sounding.

And do you have Kenwood Excelons up front? If they are standard Kenwood's I would move the polks up front, they are much more balanced speakers, I think that might give you a bit better results also. Few tips, sounds like you got a right start thats for sure

I've been using Valentine1 for over 2 years now... it's absolutely amazing. I've used over 5 other radars, definitely good, but pricey.

I'm thinking about switching to Beltronics RX75... so I can mount in dash, but it requires 1.5"... so not sure how that's going to work. going to wait until the HU comes in, then see how much space I actually have.

what's the difference between ohms? In a nutshell.. I bought a 6ohm sub on accident, and now I'm not sure how screwed I am.

will my jl 500/1 still be good?

Is it dual 6ohm or just svc 6ohm?
And what sub did you purchase?

That is a great amp though good choice!

Reason I ask is the JL 500/1 puts out 500 watts at 1-4ohms, not sure about above that. Most amps would put out 250 watts at lets say 4ohms and 500 watts at 2ohms.

Now OHM is a resistance amount, if you under resist and amplifier it will get them really hot and possibly destory them, in some cases even cause the damage to your amp to fry your speakers.
