  • Help with speakers

Alright I have been very pleased with my stereo setup, until recently. It happened after I disconnected my battery. Maybe blown or the configurations for the head unit are not right? What would be the best settings to put everything at? It seems that one of my front speakers is really distorted, a fuzzy sound, I think it might be blown. My steup conists of two 10 polk gxr subs in the hatch area, a mtx thunder 275x amp, pioneer deck, rear 6.5 pioneers circle speakers(the better ones), and 6.5 clarions in the front( which one seems to be messed up). Now what I was thinking of doing was taking out the clarions and putting the pioneers in their place. Then maybe getting some 6 by 9s for the rear. Now what is the difference between 2, 3 , 4 way speakers. And if I were to put in the 6 by 9s could it be as easy as taking the old ones out and swapping the new ones in, with the same wires? Of course making new mounting for them? Thanx and any suggestsions would be great.

Disconnecting a battery shouldn't damage anything. For the front speakers I would first try and determine which one is sounding distorted (left or right). For example, if your left front sounds distorted, (if it's not too much of a pain to do) temporarily disconnect it and put the right front speaker in its place. Listen and see if you still hear the distortion (fuzziness). If the distortion goes away then it's more than likely a bad speaker. A blown speaker will usually distort (crackle, fuzz, pop) really bad once you turn up the volume a little.

You could probably mount a (6 x 9) in the rear. Wiring won't be an issue since the wires are already there ... but you'll have to modify the opening. From what I remember how the opening is on my car, I don't think a (6 x 9) will simply drop right in. Since you have subs, I personally wouldn't mess around trying to stick a (6 x 9) back there. The bass from your subs will drown out any bass from the rear speakers. I would just stick with the 6-1/2" (round) speakers for the rear.

Oh and the difference between 2, 3, 4 or 5 way speakers is simply the amount of speakers contained into one speaker. Two ways have a woofer and a tweeter mounted in the middle. Three ways have a woofer and use a small mid and tweeter mounted in the middle. Four and five ways just have multiple tweeters and mids mounted all in the center of the woofer. Example of a 5-way Pioneer (6 x 9) bellow.

Thanx. Yah I listened to the different speakers and it is only coming from the left front. What would be some good 6 1/2 to buy that wont cost that much. The clarions were not that great anyways, but they were already installed in the car and sounded good for my purposes.

How much is too much? Could you spare $120?
