  • Bizarre Fog Light Lamp / ASR Switch Heating

I just got a used 2000 camaro and noticed an odd problem with it, I'm hoping that someone here might have some insight into it. My foglight and ASR lamps seem to heat up on some occasions to abnormal levels. As in, if you press your finger to them they get very very hot (near painful). they don't seem abnormally bright, and the wires that connect to them do not seem abnormally hot so I doubt it's heat being conducted through the wires or from the heating vent directly above them. The issue seems to happen almost exclusively at night, after about 10 minutes driving time. I'm pretty baffled, as is one mechanic I've already taken it to. I've tried replacing them but that didn't change anything at all. I'm thinking there may be something odd as far as voltage goes, but before I shell out the cash for a new multimeter, or take it in to another mechanic I'm wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this before.

Mine do that too. I've never really thought anything of it...maybe I should.

Interesting, if yours have been doing it for a while then maybe I shouldnt' be worried about it. Have you experienced any problems that could be connected to that?

I noticed that on the way home from the dealer when my Camaro was brand new. I always assumed it was normal.

What is ASR? Do you mean the area by the fog light switch? It may be from the dimmer. I keep mine as low as it will go without turning off... I never touched it, but I assume it gets pretty warm...

ASR is traction control, I mistyped tho, I actually have SGS (Second Gear Start)

I never noticed the fog light switch, but I have noticed that my traction control switch does get pretty hot, enough to be uncomfortable if I hold my finger on it for too long. i think it's normal, the bulb inside is probably a little too close to the switch do to a poor design. But it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Well yeah, there is a normal light bulb in there so it will naturally get hot. I too think they get a little too hot due to the design, but it seems normal.

I'm sure it's a normal thing. Probably happens with any of the lighted switches (foglights, TCS, ASR, SGS). The steering wheel controls or the buttons on the radio never get hot though

I have a 2000 Camaro too and that issue is NORMAL.
What I did however that I like is that I bought two
lenses (yellow) that I put in front of the fog light lens
to make it truly a fog light. The cost is $1.90 each Stock no. 243-091 from Parts Express.......parts-express.com
Then when you need to be seen in rain and fog you
                      have something that actually works.
