• matching an amp to a sub

    alright. here's the deal.
my friend has a kenwood amp, but it keeps on cutting off because of the heat. so he wants a new amp. i'm recommending him a JBL because its cheap power that works well.

he has two alpine type s subs. to be exact, these

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2420366797

so i was thinking. he should get the 600.1. at 2ohms it'll put out 600w's. if you run the subs in parallel, they'll be at a 2ohm load. this is the amp

tell me i'm correct in my logic. remember, he has TWO alpine type s'. or is he going to have to go with the 1200W one to get the appropriate power to them?

    thanks in advance.

I never have quite understood how to calculate power when the subs are wired parallel like that, but after looking at what you're saying, I think you sound right.

The one question I'd ask would be whether the JBL amp is 600x1 RMS. My guess would be that the amp is 600x1 peak, and would be pushing somewhat less than that for an RMS rating. If that's the case, you should be fine, seeing as how the sub's themselves are only rated at 200 watts RMS. I'd just be careful on how high you turn up the gain on the amp.

Now, it's totally possible that I'm COMPLETELY wrong on this, but that's just my best guess. If anyone out there thinks differently, please say something lol.

Ok. Something! You are wrong Hotwheelz. Sorry.

1st. The JBL BP600.1 is indeed 600WRMSx1@2ohms. It's a great buy for the money.

2nd. Jamie. The subs you linked to are the Alpine Type-S DUAL 4 OHM version. If these are indeed the subs your friend has, then wiring everything in parallel will give you a 1 ohm load. A 2 ohm load is not possible with those subs. Your choices are 1ohm, 4 ohms and 16 ohms. I'm not 100% sure if the 600.1 is stable to 1 ohm. I KNOW the 1200.1 is. Not sure about the 600.1. If you spend the extra $75 to get the 1200.1, keep the gain at min. Especially if he is running an aftermarket head unit. You will fry those puppies in no time. What type of box is he running?

a 1200W amp would be overkill for those type S subs, not a good idea personally, i'd recommend having an amp pushing each sub seperately...

i'm trying to keep him in a budget. on the link, it said if you run the subs in parallel it'd keep them at a 2ohm load. at least i thought thats what i said.

          this is what it says..

quote:
Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 2 ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 8 ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4 ohm load.

if thats the case, then the amp should be plenty.

plus, i'd rather not having to rig up to amps just to power sub woofers. that'd cost more money with a distrobution block and what not..

any other opinions. thanks for everything so far.

Id recommend the profile CA600 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=18796
It will put out 225 watts to each sub when you wire their coils parallel. it is an excellent buy.

The desciption of the woofers is correct. However, your friend has TWO of these woofers. You can wire each one to 2 ohms, but the JBL BP600.1 is a single channel amp. So you will be forced to wire the two subwoofers together. You can wire them in series for a 4 ohm load or in parallel for a 1 ohm load.

And as Slip stated, the 1200.1 will crush these woofers. You can run it, but keep the gain on min. Don't try to be ballsy and edge it up a bit..... it will bite you in the a$$!!! Then your friend will be looking for new woofers too!!! :D
