  • wiring up pioneer deck

I have a 97 firebird and just bought a pioneer p6400. I bought a wiring harness to hook it up and I cant figure out how to hook up the wires. I tried to color match them all yellow to yellow, red to red... that didnt work. The cd player wouldn't even turn on. I tried a bunch of other wire combinations and i have to have the reds from each and the yellows from each all twisted together and then hook the orange illumination wire in with them to get my dash to light up. It works fine the only problem is the decks not getting a constant. The clock resets itself everytime I turn the car off. Is there a wire combination I need to try? Anyone else ever had this problem?

Sounds like the easiest fix for you is go to Circuit City and buy one of their pre-wired harness adapters. Assuming you didn't cut into the stock radio harness, the adapters just plug into the harness and then into the pioneer HU.

They cost about $30, and are worth it. Total ease of use, no randomly twisting wires together, no trying combinations.

And I could be wrong, but I believe ilumination is a gray wire and the constant 12V is the orange wire.

Dosent it tell you on the wireing harness instrusctions what each wire is for? And in the instructions for the deck it tell you what they are for? I just did my girlfriends neon and thats what i had to do.

I bought and used the Sosche wiring harness that plugs into the factory one. The yellow from that and the cd player said batt/constant. The red from the harness and the red from the cd player both said ignition. A orange one from the harness and the orange one from the cd player said illumination and there was another orange one from the harness that said positive dimmer. I hooked them all up right and it wouldnt even turn on. Like I said the only way it will turn on is if I hook all those wires together. I dont think that wiring harness from circuit city would work because I think my problems somewhere from the factory harness back but I'm not sure. Maybe the Sosche plug is bad? maybe the plug to the cd player is bad? i dont know.

Try disconnecting the Dimmer. I have never had any of them work for me in the past, that could be you problem. Also get a volt meter and check to make sure that all of your source wires have voltage. If you don't have voltage check the fuse. It almost sounds like somethings up with your batt constant.
Also check your ground wire. Your ground may be connected wrong, and your radio won't turn on if there is no ground.

I have a pioneer deck, and if I recall correctly there are 2 or 3 wires that you do not need to connect for your deck to work properly.....unfortunately i did not have a digi cam in the day when i was installing my deck so i dont have any pictures showing exactly what i did, but if i had to do it all over again i'd just play around..
