I would definitely start by changing the fluid. A low fluid level or extremely dirty fluid could cause this. Is this a 5 speed we're talking about?

X2 on RP , also might look into a Ripper shifter or a Pro shifter since they have shorter throws and feel alot better than the stock shifter.

i bet the previous owner put manual transmission fluid in it

there is no way auto trans fluid would do that, even if it is dirty

Auto's and manuals take the same fluid dexron III , he has a manual.

Royal Purple synchromax is a good fluid, if it's available to you. To answer your question, recommended fluid is Dexron III ATF (yes, Automatic Transmission Fluid ;) )

                      yes, i know?

i said i bet the previous owner put manual transmission fluid in his transmission and that is why it is shifting weird, because if you use ATF, like what you should use, there is no way the transmission would be shifting like that, even if the fluid was very dirty
