    Well I was driving yesterday after installing my new prothane transmission mount and i got on it a few times seemed to be fine. Well, today I romped on it and BAM heard the horrible tell-tale clunk. Well i looked under there and everything seemed fine. Drove again, same noise. Took it apart, and found out the driver's side bolt which holds the tranny mount to the tranny was crossthreaded, it basically just fell out. Would a tap and die kit work to re-tap that hole cause I sure as hell ain't buying a new transmission case just for that damn bolt? Any help GREATLY appreciated as I've never used a tap/die before.

    Oh, also, what in hell size of tap/die do I use? I know the bolt was an M10 1.5in 40mm long bolt Sorry for the newbie question.

    Here's the deal. It's been quite awhile since I last looked at my transmission mount but I do remember the bolts are all the way through.

    If you can fit a nut on the top of the mounting flange and your bolt is long enough... you are more than welcome to go that route. Will work just fine, put bolt though - slip on washer - spin your nut - tighten.

    If there isn't enough clearance (again I can't picture it off the top of my head) then find a drill/tap just slightly larger than the old striped out hole and buy a new bolt to match. Taps are easy to use, just make sure you drill out the hole with the right sized drill for your tap, and while taping the hole be very perpendicular, use some form of lube since it's Aluminum (if you don't have anything on hand some crisco will work) that and every time your turn the tap say 360 degrees, back it back out another half turn. Don't just plunge it forward in one shot all the way.

    Sorry I can't give you an exact size, but just hold up some drill bits until you find one just bigger than your stripped hole. Buy the matching tap, handle, and bolt. Done.


    Oh.. and next time don't torque them down so much, its is just aluminum afterall.

      BTW, the box in the red is what I mean by if a washer/nut fit.. just run the bolt through and go that route:

        Oh my, hell I never even thought of checking if that hole went all the way through. I appreciate the info! I will definently go the washer/nut route if that hole does indeed go through. If not, I'll tap a new hole and will surely not torque them down so much. Amazing what 135 pounds of flying fury will do to a bolt in aluminum. Thanks man, appreciate it.

          Update: Thanks Taheen, bolt on the top worked like a charm on the driver's side. I figured I do the same on the passenger side for insurance, there were some clearance issues, although I did manage to get it nice and tight. Thanks for the help!

            where are ya'll getting the polly mounts at for the tranny

              I got mine from Summit Racing for $21.95. Part number is PTP-7-1604. I drove without the spacer for a week and with the spacer (pictured here: http://forum.camarov6.com/showthread.php?t=81378). I ordered my spacer from onlinemetals.com and just drilled the holes. Anyways, there was bad vibration without the spacer that went away after driving for a week, but still small vibration at low rpm's. I then installed the spacer and there was ZERO vibration and back to stock noise levels. The shifts are sooooo much firmer and the grinding of gears when shifting fast from 1-2 and 2-3 has completely disappeared. The horrible clunking when i slam the gas while coasting disappeared as well. The response to throttle is so much more crisp, I'm truly amazed and HIGHLY recommend this mod. Make SURE you have a dremel to notch out your crossmember and longer bolts when using the spacer. Oh, and don't torque the hell out of the tranny mount bolts! lol learned from experience :)

                Glad the bolt/nut worked out well for you. Really happy that transmission spacer thread w/picture helped somebody. :)

                PS: That clunk... GOD I know that sound and it's such a horrible noise to be hearing from under the shifter. :)

                    At the end of Part Three, we changed the valvetrain of the 3.8-liter V6 in the Tom Henry RS. We installed new, Yella Terra "Ultralite" 1.8:1, aluminum roller rocker arms, Katech valve springs and Katech titanium retainers on our 3800 Series II V6.
                    Ultralites are nearly 25% lighter than the stock 1.6 rockers and 8% lighter than the SLP aluminum...
