recently ive been hearing a loud clunk when i accelerate from a light or when i put it in reverse. so i checked underneath and my torque arm bushing is completely chewed up. i was wondering if i were to replace the driveshaft to an aluminum, would i still need the torque arm or not?(1 pc steel, A4 btw)

yes you need a torque arm. without it you would have issues.

Unless you want the drive shaft and rear end yoke to come through the floor you should keep the torque arm. Back seat passengers might not like that.
