  • gearing question.

Someone near me is selling a used '98 Camaro 7.5 rear axle. It has 4.10 gears, posi, and T/A cover. I told him I would buy it because he's selling it for $50.

So I was wondering (a) how to find my current gearing and (b) would 4.10 work well on my car I hope to supercharge soon?

also what kind of programmer would I have to use to fix shifting/speedometer?

    Thanks.

      Re: gearing question.

You can find your current gearing by looking on your driver's side door jam, or in your glove box. Those are the list's of GM's "codes" for what your car came with, and we happen to have a database of them here:

      http://tech.firebirdv6.com/generalspecs.html

Also, noteworthy, If you have a Y87 code, and your car is an A4, then your car came with a 3.42 posi rear, Auburn or Zexel-Torsen depending on the year. I'm not positive about the gear ratio of a T-5 with Y87... I think it's 3.23. One of the easiest ways to identify this code (without checking the list) is to check your stock exhaust. If you had a dual-out stock exhaust, then you have this code.

Or, codes aside, you could jack the car up and spin the rear wheel once, while counting how many times the driveshaft turns. But it's much more accurate IMO to take the time to check the codes.

4.10 is going to kill your gas mileage. Period. It's pretty much regarded as a "low streetability" gearing, but it's not as terrible as that might sound. If you're going to supercharge, then you're going to have a nice drag car there as long as you have the right supporting mods.

The best way to get your speedo programmed correctly is to reflash your PCM. But again, I don't know what year your car is, so I couldn't go in-depth on that. Good luck, and welcome to the forum!

Then a 4.10 is gonna be big step for you. Expect the car to launch pretty hard, accelerate REALLY quick, and break lose real easy!

lol, I think I need the mpg. Its only $50 though so I still might pick it up just in case I do drag it. Also it has a T/A cover that I could probably sell to someone on here, if they wanted to put it on their firebird.

If it has an auburn posi, would that be transferable while keeping my current gears?

              Re: gearing question.

mmm...could be. If it has series 2 carrier... and I think the auburn differentials all had series 3 carriers. but for $50, as long as it's been taken care of, that's a steal. Auburn differentials usually go for 5-600 new, and the gears are usually 2-300 a pair.

                    Re: gearing question.

I was asking him about the gears and he said he would throw in his 3.42 gears too.

So im getting 3.42 gears, 4.10 gears, auburn posi, and series 3 carrier and a Trans Am cover (which I probably wont use), for $50...not too shabby.

That's an awesome deal man... If you still wanna get rid of the Trans Am cover, I might be interested.

That's not a Trans Am Cover...that's a TA Performance Products girdle. The "TA" has nothing to do with F-bodies at all
