  • Auto transmission jerk problem

I seem to have a problem in the transmission of my automatic 96 3.8. It only does it in 2nd gear and only at about 4-5k rpms. Basically when I hit 4k rpms the car jerks and it sounds like the engine jumps up in rpms a bit then goes back down quickly as if the car was coming out of gear. I don't think its a miss because it doesn't do it in any other gear. Anything I can do to fix this short of a rebuild?

Also is the transmission on these cars computer or vacuum controlled?

I believe a shift kit should help out that problem, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

you might try getting the transmission flushed then when you get home put some lucas in it...even if it doesnt sound like it will work, give it a try, 80 bucks is alot better than a tranny rebuild..its helped me before when i didnt think it would

sounds like what mine did, mine ended up throwing a code for it after a while (p1870) I think it was, if its what I think it is take it to a tranny shop it may need a valve body update. I had mine fixed RIGHT away and they said I did no damage to the tranny, but it is a very common problem. Its been like a year and a half and my tranny is working super strong right now.

Are you sure its not your torque converter clutch? It would be slipping in 4th though.

Realistically, automatic transmissions cant "slip out of gear" because they don't have "gears" like a manual would. They have planetary gearsets. On the other hand clutches inside the transmission could very well slip. Sorry if that doesn't help.

                  Re: Auto transmission jerk problem

I still have this problem and I haven't done anything about it, but it hasn't gotten any worse.

However its still annoying because it prevents having fun with the car. And I was mistaken in the original post, it is at the top of 2nd gear (like 4000ish and up).

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be?

How hard/costly is that to fix?

Remove the trans and then the pump from the trans to replace the band. You might be able to get by replacing the servo with a corvette one, but if it's already slipping, it's probably too late.

Hmm well it hasnt gotten any worse in the last year and a half so I guess its not something that needs to be fixed right away.
