This might be a dumb question, but im still learning.... Is a Torsen posi the same thing as a limited slip differential?

NOT! LSD is a generic term.
There are several ways to achieve this. One is with a Torsen, another is an Auburn. Both are LSD but use different means to achieve this.Robert - owner www.FirebirdV6.com "Mid-life crisis? I'm way beyond that!"

Re: torsen posi same as LSD?
Yes, technically both are considered a type of limited slip differential. But a torque sensitive differential (Torsen) is very different from a speed sensitive limited slip differential (which is what is most often meant when refering to the term "limited slip differential" by magazines and parts websites.) Two approaches to traction management on very opposite ends of the spectrum. There is no actual wheel slip with a Torsen differential because it is capable of transferring torque before slip occurs - it is actively managing torque between the drive wheels 100% of the time. A "LSD" only truely acts on the drive wheels after physical wheel slippage has occured and slips to bring traction below the set threshold of the clutch pack / viscous coupling. My \'98 Camaro

My \'98 Tacoma

Re: torsen posi same as LSD?
i've got an Auburn LSD and 3.42 gears and i've no trouble leaving 2 even black marks =) posi(traction) is really just slang for putting about equal power to both wheels. a limited slip differential(lsd) would be the best type for a street car. it gives about the same torque on both wheels and still lets you take turns smoothly. a locker would be good for a drag car but not really for a street car, and since our f-bodys handle so well why put in a locker and have nasty wheel hop?

Re: torsen posi same as LSD?
Lockers don't create wheel hop your thinking of SPOOLS. Lockers let one wheel be driven (by the ground) FASTER than the other during a turn, they just make clicking noise doing it. The best part of having a locker is people telling you your rear is making noise and they think something is broken.
