Looking at buying a new clutch. I have a 99 Firebird with about 146,000 miles on it so its about time to replace the clutch. My question is what do you guys think is the best clutch out there for the price?

what do you have done to your car. alot depends on how much horsepower your putting out. if the spec is installed right they can be great. but tend to chatter. i have a centerforce dual friction. that bites super hard and is holding strong with my 338 rwhp. if you basically stock with a few bolt ons, you can even stick with a stock clutch.

Yah, I was going to say for bolt-ons, if the stock clutch held for 156k and you're happy with the way it performed, get another stock or stock-replacement level clutch.

ah, go stage 3 ;) lol j/k. I would reccomend a stock clutch. As long as you aren't planning on upgrading to nitrous or FI or some major engine work, your stock clutch will hold up pretty well. Also, welcome to the forum

I have never driven anything with a clutch upgrade. Mine is due for replacement soon as well. Are these performance clutches harder to engage? Reason I ask is I get stuck in a lot of stop and go traffic and I don't want to kill my foot.

Yea but as we are all aware of, tq has more relevance than hp

My car is stock right now but I'm 16 so I have pretty big plans for it. So I have been thinking about going for a stage 1 clutch but not sure which to get. I was looking at the Spec clutches and the price isnt bad on them I am looking at spending no more then $400. Also is it possible to install a clutch yourself and if I take it to a shop about how much would it cost them to put one on?

you can deff do it yourself. you have to have you car jacked up, and drop your tranny! it's tons of fun. make sure you have alot of extentions and a swivel

And time. If you're going to do it yourself, it'll probably take you some time to get the tranny out of there. It took my dad and I 4 hrs to get it out the first time, and that was with a lift and air tools and not dropping the exhaust. About a month ago I ruined my clutch and replaced it with a new one. Took us about 4hrs to get it all out, install the new clutch, put it back in, and rotate the tires :D It'll get easier after you do it a few times, of course :P

does anyone have any brands of clutches that are good?

stock ones are VERY expensive, so i would like to get an aftermarket one with stock-like qualities

kristen, I have to admit it though, you're a lot better driver thana lot of people on this forum though. You are probably right though, and I'm most likely wrong, seeing as you actually own an m5 :)
