  • preformance automatic?

im currently writing a reseach paper for class and im wondering if there is such a thing as a performance automatic transmission for a 99 3.8L? i realize that most performance transmissions are manual, but if there is an automatic one it would be really helpful to the developement of my paper. so does such a thing exist? if one does, any information you guys can provide would be very helpful.

If you're going to get a good grade on the paper.

Make sure you spell performance right

and yes, shift kits, stalls (not actually tranny but close enough), as well as built autos for the big-time drag cars

Automatics are better suited for high horsepower drag applications. Sticks are good for road racing and autocross (auto-x) I know theres some very low 1/4 mile stick shifts, but automatics are more consistent and can shift faster than any human can with a stick.

As for your answer, a built up 4L60E, 700R4, or even a Turbo Hydramatic (THM) 350 or 400. Most times, if not all, paired up with a smaller/higher stall torque converter to make it like a stick where you can launch at a higher rpm.

      Good luck with your paper!

if u wanna get really technical about it, the stock 4L60e's would be considered more 'performance" than the sticks, cuz theyre slightly faster than the stick cars...what kinda performance are you talkin about?

Define "faster" because my 5-speed traps significantly higher than a A4 running similar times

                        It's the rear end gears.

I wouldn't say autos are faster stock, but with a higher converter, an auto would take a manual most of the time. Sticks break rears easier too.

WRONG. ive seen a4s and m6s with the same rear gears and same mods run similar times and the m6 trapped higher everytime.
