  • Transmission and Differential Fluid change

I have searched and see different things mentioned about the Rear Differential fluid type that I would need.

    1999 Firebird 3.8L V6 Automatic 82,000 miles

What transmission fluid do I need?

What diff oil do I need?

Last Saturday I just went to dealer to get differntial fluid. It was 80W-90 but was 10 bucks a bottle and I needed 3 bottles of it to equal 1.8quarts. He told me to go to autozone and get two bottles that were quart in same weight and it would be good. I bought the LSD additive and gasket from him though. The two bottles of Valvoline gear oil were less than 11 bucks after tax.

Do I have to get the additive from the dealer?

Do you have posi? Also for your year you have a diffrent differntial than I do I beleive and I think it does not require the additive. Someone else will chime in hopefully. The additive was only 7 bucks or so though if you do need it.

Yes I do have the positraction. I found the manual online and it says to use the additive. I called Advance and they sell the additive. Anyone know about synthetic gear oil? Synthetic transmission fluid?

I plan on changing my differential fluid this weeked too. I'm not sure if I have limited slip, but if I don' then I don't need the GM additive? If I go to the dealer with my VIN can they tell me if it has limited slip? I don't have a maual, but 1.75 quarts of 80w-90 will go into a 2000 3.8 regardless of limited slip or not. I've talked to my dad about this and he told me to go conventional. He tried synthetic in the Vette, and said it made it worse off.

Read this thread before you do anything. It has a lot of info on differential fluid. Ask questions. Better safe than sorry.
