  • 4.10 gear/ to install or not to install

Hey guys Im still throwing the idea of installing a GM 4.10 gear in my car in a couple of weeks when I finaly put my stall in. Ive heard things to install the gear and Ive heard things not to do the gear. Ive been told that a 4.10 gear is too much gear for a v6 auto that is a DD. Then Ive heard that its not and that it wont kill mpg much more than with my 3.73 that I have now. So I ask you guys what are the real pros and cons of this mod and should I do it?

well, considering the 4th gear ratio in the auto tranny is actually shorter than the 5th gear in the manual tranny, 4.10's would be a better fit for auto's than a manual...so that argument goes out the window.
Then Ive heard that its not and that it wont kill mpg much more than with my 3.73 that I have now.
If you're already content w/ 3.73s, then you probably won't even register the difference in MPG going to 4.10's.

So I ask you guys what are the real pros and cons of this mod and should I do it?
Here's a pro that's pretty damn real: All the record-holding V6's that are NA have 4.10's or higher

I've had 3.23s, 3.73s, and 4.10s. 4.10's are the current set I'm using, and i'll hang onto those till it's convienant for me to go up to 4.56s

Re: 4.10 gear/ to install or not to install

The only reason I didn't upgrade to 4.10's from my 3.42's is that the 4.10's would require the added expense of the paddle kit from SLP with my T2R torsen diff. The difference from 3.73's isn't a huge one but there would be some to be gained from it. If you are really wanting to break records spring for the 4.10's if not then the 3.73's will probably continue to serve you well.

your freeway milage will suffer more then anything else. Especially if u are crusing around 80 mph, youll be tacking acouple hundred rpm's higher, i believe..

It will be worse but not by much in comparison to the 3.73's.

At the moment I have 3.23 and manual trans and planning to change to 3.42 or 3.73. Can anyone tell what is approx. mpg difference for 3.23 gears city/highway drive compared to 3.42 and 3.73?

The N/A race car has 4.10s seems to do well. If you dont do alot of highway driving why not.
