  • CES Light.. Trans-code

I'm sad. I bought a 1998 Firebird about 2 - 3 months ago. It had 103,000 miles on it, but it ran fine, checked out fine at the shop.

Now, 12/26 the second time the CES light came on and stayed on. I got it down to AAMCO, and they confirmed a "NOC" which isn't bad for the engine... just need to replace the sensor. But they also pulled a transmission code, which indicates the transmission is slipping and needs to be rebuilt/replaced.

How much does a rebuilt transmission cost in your personal opinion?

** Call just came in from AAMCO, ~3000 to rebuild because everything in there down to the electronics is shot. No ETA on when it would be done.

3000 to rebuild sounds expensive. also i once had a transmission slipping code but my transmission wasn't slipping. it was a sensor. also i called around when i thought i would have to get it rebuilt and the most expensive quote i got was 1,500.

If it is really that expensive to get it rebuilt, then buy a new one.

I got a new tranny and had it installed for only $750. This was for a manual though. Price is probably subject to change for auto's.

From what they told me, the gears were stripped, the electronics were fried, and believe it or not there was dirt in the trans. I would have never of known because I felt or hear nothing.

What would you recommend? I see too many options:
                • without converter
                • 1800 to 2000 converter
                • 2300 to 2500 converter
                • 9.5 inch 3000 converter
                • 9.5 inch 3500 converter
                • 9.5 inch 4000 converter

Are you going to be using this car for the drag strip?

If so, go with a 3000 or higher. If not, get the 2000 converter.

Nope. I don't even drive fast because too many cops around here. The worst is when I get pulled over for doing 28 in a 25.

level 1 with a 2000 stall then would be ideal and if you order today you get a 50 dollar discount , also assuming your a V6 car you would price from the LT1 listings Not the LS1 .
                      THANKS

Upgraded hardware for the rebuilt transmission - $150.00 (fixes the stripping problem and what not, among things)
Brand new high performance torque - $210.00
Brand new electronics for transmission - $110.00

Thanks! I get it back tomorrow. I would have picked it up today, but I'm at Rutgers right now. Had work from 6 am - 10 pm. Long shifts. I'll let you know how the rebuilt came along!
