• Ready For Clutch R&R

The clutch is ready to go soon, I can feel it. Even the guys I trust at the car wash tell me so as they stall the 3.8 upon driving the '96 Camaro inside.

The clutch pedal is at its high point and I thought I could pick your minds on what should be a complete R&R ( remove & replace ) job.

So far the checklist I compiled is as follows:
1- my choice of brand name aftermarket clutch ( CenterForce or Ram )
2- a resurfaced flywheel
3- throwout bearing
4- hydraulic slave thingy ( give me the specific name? )
5- one piece rear main seal ( gotta do it while I'm there, why not? )
6- aluminum driveshaft ( still looking for one locally )

What else do I need besides forking over hundred$$$ of dollar$$$? The stock 5 speed is in excellent condition.

I did a Search and I was still undecided about which clutch package to purchase, someone blew up their Spec II setup I read recently here.

I believe GM makes the hydraulic slave assembly a perfect replacement part but are there any other aftermarket companies I should look into?

My Camaro has been so trustworthy to me that I want to keep it going with excellent quality parts. I am authorizing a hardcore speed shop to do the install also. The guys there want to slap a Tremec tranny in there but the plans were to keep it stock for now. My hardcore project is in the planning stages for 2007.

Do not get ram, I heard that they go out really fast....

As for brand, I could go with Spec or Centerforce... They are about the same price, you can get Spec from Thunderracing.com

I had a RAM once, but the chatter was so bad that it was nearly undriveable. It held really well and grabbed hard, so in that aspect it was great. I ended up replacing it with just a stock replacement, but I have heard great things about Spec.

Re: Ready For Clutch R&R

I'm still tossed on the automatic rear main seal replacement. I didn't do mine when I did my clutch, because it wasn't leaking. No problems in the year since.

My feeling is to let it go until it's a problem. It seems there's as many tales of infant mortality on replaced seals as there is on original seals. Don't know if it's the way they get installed or what..

All good replies here.

I could use some links pertaining to the hydraulic slave assembly. I did Search and came up with pictures only. There must be a complete kit before I begin such a task of overhauling the clutch system.

Anybody willing to help?

This is what I'm talking about to upgrade or stick with factory?

Get a SPEC clutch. If your "hardcore" project is really "hardcore" they are the only people that make hardcore clutchs might as well get used to the company. Spec 3+

Re: Ready For Clutch R&R

I am not a fan of my spec II, to chatterery. But eh... I could just be a pussy.

unless I was going big power adder I wouldn't get anything but a stock replacement. And if you are gong with a big poweradder, you are dumb because you will blow up the tranny.

do a new slave regardless, I believe they upgraded the hydraulics form older years to this, it comes with a TOB.

I woudlnt do the rear main unless it was leaking. I have seen people do them and have them leak and if they were new.
