What's the degree of difficulty for rebuilding one myself?? I've got two bad transmissions, a decent shop and plenty of time.

The transmissions are for an '86 V6.

depends on who you talk to.... just taking off the tranny pan and looking inside scares the hell out of me, but others say its really simple once you know what you are doing. I would imagine if you arent rushed, didnt have to ABSOLUTLEY RELY on a perfect job, and have a good "how to" manual, you could do it yourself.

I rebuilt mine myself in my apartment. There are tricky parts, and it takes patients, and more importantly organization. There are a couple hundred different parts in the transmission, so once you take it all apart, it all needs to be organized and marked. That is really the hardest part. If you have the room to take one part out at a time and lay it down exactly how it came out, it won’t be too bad. I also used a digital camera and took a lot of picture (I should have taken more) while taking it apart.

You can rent tools from here: http://www.kdsperformance.com/tools.html
That should help with the price.

I guess it should be noted that I messed up my valve body when I rebuilt it. I got one spring put in incorrectly, and when I put the tranny in, I didn’t have a 1st gear. So I took it to a tranny shop, and they rebuilt the valve body again. So it is possible to mess up too, just go slow and be careful. Other than that, I’ve put 15,000 hard miles on my rebuild, and it’s doing fine.

I have all the pictures and stuff at:
