• 5M to A4 or 6M

a synchronizer is going out in my car (44,000 miles :mad . i can live with it for a while because it's only moderately affecting going into 5th gear. if the tranny must come out, what's involved in swapping out the 5M to the A4? isn't there a hose that runs from the radiator to the A4? how much can i get an A4 for, new and/or used?

also, does anyone have the link for the adapter that fits the T56 to a 3.8?

    thanks.

Don't get a 6 speed. You don't have enough torque to run it. There is a reason why there is only 6 gears in V8s not 6s or 4s. You will not have enough power to move the 6th gear.

Auto or manual is a personal choice.

Ahh but if you install a 6 speed with a 4:10 rear gear setup, or even 3.73's, you'll have plenty of power on the highway and very nice launch capabilities.

However concerning 3.23's and below, definetly don't bother with a 6 speed.

Might you try the high performance 5 spd from Tremec - the TKO-3550?

there will be shortly, which is why it's a consideration.

a 6spd will bolt up from an LT1 with a different input shaft and I believe a T5 clutch is used. The bolt holes do line up contrary to popular belief. We tried it when mine was replaced at the dealer and it did fit.

so what's wrong with this idea. I was thinking about it myself. You have the advantage of having SOTP feel on take-off, yet enough gears to keep your power going (and fuel economy up) on the highways

If I had a 6spd in my car with my 4.1 gears, my highway cruising rpm would be a lot less - maybe even somewhere around 2300. So when it's time to replace the tranny, I might consider the 6spd myself.
