• Anybody know if Richmond t-10 can replace the t-5?

I posted this in 3rd gen too, but thought there might be some transmission gurus here too.

It's for my son's 1992 RS. The original t-5 died a slow horrible death and eventually it wouldn't stay in gear even if you held the shifter as hard as possible. We put a rebuilt t-5 in over the summer. Right away the 4th gear synchro was bad, but he had to keep driving the car anyway. Rather than put another t-5 in it, he's thinking about a t-10 5-speed.

I know the shifter is different, and may require some custom work on the console and tunnel.

    Backup lights?

Will the driveshaft work? Will it need to be longer or shorter? Is a different yoke needed?

Will it mate up to the cross member?

We are planning to put a transmission in over the holidays while school is out and I'm off for a few days, so we're trying to figure out our plan pretty soon....

    Thanks!

What caused the first one to die? Did the T10 come OEM in anything? Is a TKO more affordable, it has the same case length and should bolt in nicely. Maybe a T56? :D

well I do know this.. if the richmond came out of a C4 vette.. .well then that will get very interesting because the c4 doesn't have a crossmember..

I'm open to any ideas. I don't know the story on what the t-10 came in. In the catalogs (jegs, etc.) it's a common one.

The very first one had several "issues" when we bought it. Sometimes it would be hard to put in reverse without having to roll the car a little. Sometimes the shifter would not go into first at all. The last time it happened, I had to sit in the back seat, put my foot on the shifter, and slowly but very firmly leg press it into first, then start the car... After a few months, it would jump out of gear (first and reverse), no matter how hard you tried to hold the shifter in place.

The second one, an Autozone rebuild, a "world class" I believe, had a bad synchro out of the crate, but by the time we got it in and discovered it had a problem, we just had to run it anyway. It grinds going into 4th on the upshift, but eventually goes into gear. If you pause it in neutral for just it a bit, it goes with no problem. It won't go into 4th on a downshift at all, no matter how you baby it or how you force it. 4th is the only problem gear in this one, so far...

It's my son's car, and he uses it to commute 30 miles each way to college daily. So we've been planning to take it out and get a warranty replacement over Christmas. But right before we were planning to take it out, he found out we might be able to get a refund, and then went on the t-10 kick.

A six-speed is beyond our budget right now, but anything that comes in around $1500 including shifter would be great. I just don't know what all will interchange. I was thinking the tko was a mustang transmission only, but if not, that's great too.

He doesn't have a backup vehicle, and mine is down right now too, so whatever we end up doing, I have to finish before school starts back in January, so I'm trying to avoid any unexpected surprises/delays, and make sure he's got something reliable when we're done...

          an option for you.

http://www.performanceunlimitedusa.c...nsmissions.htm there's the list, most of the GM ones will fit. The 3550 has different kits that work with it... if I ever blow mine well these are some options for me as well.

              Great links and ideas!!

Looks like the t-56 needs a new crossmember and some other things that I don't want to tackle on a quick job for a daily driver.

The tremec's look like the way to go. A new (not rebuilt) world class is cheaper than the autozone rebuild was...
