  • RPMs for 3.08-4.1 rear gears and the A4 at diffrent speeds

    Since everyone asks about gas milage and RPMs if they switch gears, I thought I would make a chart to help visualize it. I used Dom's equation that he posted in another topic to make the chart. For tire size I used 26.2 inch diameter. This I determined from here. I used the tire size 215/60R16.

    The transmission ratio was determined on a 1996 Camaro convertable with a 4L60-E transmission using AutoTap.

    I looked through a few posts about gear swaps, and the RPMs in the chart seem to line up fairly well with the real world numbers members are posting.

    rpm = (mph x gear ratio x 336) / tire daimeter

    Those are good charts, but they're not exactly right. In forth gear, it takes me about 2700 RPMs to cruise at 70, where your chart says 2539. Good work though with the charts. That must have taken awhile unless you have a programmable calculator.

      For 3.42s, you're a tad bit off, CLOSE, but a tad off. Here are some numbers for ya

      1st gear redline = 40MPH +/- 2MPH
      2nd gear redline = 77MPH =/- 2MPH
      3rd gear redline = 118MPH fact :D

      4th gear crusing
      1000RPM - 40MPH
      1500RPM - 48MPH
      2000RPM - 62MPH
      2500RPM - 82MPH
      3000RPM - 96MPH

      hope this helps
