  • Question on gear change and carriers

I want to get 3:73 gears. I don't know anything about carriers, or open. How do I know what to get? I'm in the middle of any engine swap, and was told that the donor car that i'm using for the swap has 2:73's and no posi. It's a 97 z28. Right now I have the 3:08's in my 97rs vert. I just don't know what to get when I see 2 and 3 carriers, and an open carrier? This is where I get lost. Any help is appreciated to learn how to know what I need. TIA

this is about as simple as it gets:

an open carrier lets one wheel freewheel while the other is spinning in the desired direction.

a limited slip type senses slippage in one wheel and transfers power to the other and they both spin at the same time.

2 and 3 series refers essentially to the size of the carrier... the higher your ratio, the thicker your ring gear is and your carrier has to correspond with that. 2.73 and 3.08 2 series carriers work for those thin ring gears but once you move above that (3.23, 3.42, 3.73, and up) you have get get a 3 series carrier.

an open carrier can be either series of carrier, if that's what you're getting at. for anything serious in our size 10 bolt, though, the desired carrier is a 3 series limited slip, whether it's auburn/eaton clutch type or torsen gear type.

Thanks for the detailed info RallyRed. So is posi the same as lsd? I hope I don't sound stupid, but I haven't explored in this area yet. And for me to get 3.73's, I need to start looking for them with a 3 series carrier then, right?

          1. posi is pretty much the same as LSD... posi is just the trade/market name for GM's LSD

          2. yes, you will need a 3 series carrier for 3.73s, but that is the type you will most likely find. in fact, there's one for sale in the for sale section of this site right now.
