  • i think my rearend is going out!!!.. UPDATE!!

    i really hope it's not.

    1) i have a rear pinion leak
    2) the is awful clunking and grinding noise coming from the rearend
    3) 3000 converter and 100 shot don't mix :D
    4) i think the driveshaft id going too//

so how do i fix this. i'm hoping the clunking noise is the u joints on the driveshaft. i have a 1pc off a 99 z28.. anyone else have these problems. also i have the y87 package from the factory,,(65,000 miles on it))

update... well today i chsnge the diff fluid with some mobil 1 75-90 and i add some lsd additive.

i also change my rear u-joint with a brute force replacement. i lubed everything and torgue eveything back to specs.

i also removed my heatsheilds in the rear to reduce the rattles...

ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW :D :D . it feels like i have a new rearend. so i'm going to give it some more time and i'm hoping my old u-joint was was the clunking noise. being i have the y87 package i could get a new rearend preety cheap, but i'm going to see how is works.. ;)

I had the same symptoms before my rearend got FUBAR'd

the leaking, and clunking. Try checking to see if the pinion nut is screwed in tightly. (it has to be torqued-screwed to a specific amount)

As for the leaking, it is probably the pinion seal.

I had to replace my rearend and get a new 1-piece driveshaft as my stock 2 piece broke in the middle.

You should definitely get it checked out and I hope everything turns out fine...

I just got around to installing the POSI rear w/3.42's this past weekend. It was a really easy and straight-forward install. The only thing that gave me grief were the friggin e-brake cables  I couldn't get the old ones off for anything!
......but a grinder took car of that :D
I really like the look of discs all the way around.

Here's some shoty pics of it.

It took me about four hours to jack the car up and remove the old one with a few beer breaks here and there. After that....well...I took a beer break for about an hour...or two :D

Then it took about three hours to get the new one in. The new driveshaft wasn't a problem, went right in and so did the rear. Just watch out for the e-brake cable! it's a PITA!

I wasn't pressed for time, so I know it can be done faster.

I was not real impressed with what it did. I was, of course, expecting better performance. My high-end I had with my old 3.08's is gone, and I can basically break the back-end loose and swing it around any turn now.(thats a good thing :D )
My speedo is about 10mph off now though.

I definetly recomend having at least one other person help you with it.

God I remember those damn cables. Keith was tugging at them for a while before I had to step in and just yank them out with some pliers!! Screw hack saws and grinders! :D Do you guys know why I have the ABS INOP light on? I know there's a sensor on the rear somewhere, should be on the differential right? I wanna make sure it's all plugged in.

It didn't set me back to badly. $300 for the COMPLETE rear, $150 for the aluminum driveshaft, and $200 for the new pads and rotors......not a bad deal.

What year is your car StockV6Cam2? I didn't have any ABS hookups for the rear, probably because of those crummy drums that were on there.

Damn I paid 510 shipped for my used z rear end with 50,000 miles and rotors with calipers and a rear sway bar attatched. Where did u get that driveshaft? Did you have to put gear fluid into the differential or something along those lines?

I got my rear with 50,000 miles on it from a '95 TA from Speed Automotive Just ask for Scott.

Awesome customer service. I highly recomend them.
The rear came with oil in it, but I of course exchanged that for healthy fluid.
I got the driveshaft from Lingenfelter off of ebay.

                          :D
