  • 4.10 wear pattern... need some advice..

So I installed GM Motive 4.10's in both zachs an my cars..

Mine whine his does not.. Today we did the first fluid change and compared wear patterns.

    Backlash is ~.008.

Zach's wear pattern is even across the entire ring tooth. Mine however is not. Mine wears more toward the outside of the ring. I pulled the pinion out and am thinking i need a thicker pinion shim is needed. This will put the pinion deeper into the assembly and thus hopefully wearing more on the inside of the ring gear as well.

    What do you guys think?

id say the pinion depth is off...run a pattern adn see how it turns out, it needs to be pretty much an oval towards the inside of the ring gear on the drive side...here lately especially when i do highway driving my 3.73's are whining pretty loud, even at 30-35 mph it does it, i think im gonna tear it down then xmas and check it out, its getting annoying...

magnus--i think your idea should fix it, just make sure you get the backlash correct using some chalk before you put everything back up.

The toe is the inside of the ring right? THe heel is the outside.

It wears more toward the heel side.. the top toe corner shows no wear at all.

I looked at many onlie pictures and there are no ovals on both zachs and my gears... Zach has a nice even patch across the entire tooth.

The thing is, how much do I adjust the pinion.. .030" shimm is stock.. which is what I have now.. I'm thinking adding .005 to .008.. not really sure.

          .005 would be ample.
