  • Shift kit for an automatic

I don't understand too much of this stuff, but is there a benefit to adding a shift kit to an automatic? How much? And if so, what brands? How much? How easy to install?

    Thanks

Shift kits firm up your shifts.
1-2 I bark the tires at WOT and 2-3 is a little firmer.

The kit you can find for around 100 dollars for a TransGo shift kit. Install I'm not sure on price I had quite a few things done at the same time!

I wouldn't attempt to do it myself I didn't even look at the instructions I just took it to my "shop" :D

Shift kit will firm up shifts

100 bucks better spent elsewhere if your tranny is otherwise stock. There is agruement otherwise, and arguement that it goes great with a torque converter.

I, however, disagree. So does an ASE Certified Master Tech & Yank Converters themselves. Its not good for the transmission & you could definitely cause some issues (like a slipping transmission).

Being able to bark the 1-2 shift is cool I will admit, however, the miniscule increase in 1/4 mile performance isn't worth the risk.

If you are hellbent on it, at least do it the right way -- with a transgo shift kit. Do not use things like the B&M Shift improver -- that has caused some serious damage to some transmissions on the board.

and then can somebody explain or direct me to a place that explains torque converters? What would be better for tranny upgrades? Any other ways to pick up torque?

        Thanks

Do a search on this site in the drivetrain forum for lots of good info.

          Also www.howstuffworks.com

They have a great explanation of converters.

It's your most 'bang for the buck' torque improving mod! It really frees up drivetrain losses on the auto's.

          Good luck.

Hey another question to the thread. I know the B/M and other "tranny" enhancing kits increase line pressure (a bad thing), but what exactly does the Transgo do instead? Also does the Transgo harm the life of the tranny like the B/M does?

Don't know about a shift kit for v6, but it throws me around in my truck. It'll chirp/bark going into 2nd (at least while everything is cool)whether you want it to or not (. just crawling along). My dad's driven it a couple of times and hates it; it can get annoying at times. But I'm still keeping it.
My question: Does it get annoying after awhile?
