if you get a 3200 stall torque converter, does that mean that every time the car stops and you and in drive, the car will rev up and idle at 3200 until you go or am i getting this wrong? cause if that's how it is, doesn't that gas mileage suck?

Stall is not exactly lock-up, but similar...

In the sense that presumably, if you're in gear and the back wheels aren't allowed to turn, you will be unable to rev the engine past the stall point, no matter how much gas you give it.

So the converter "slips" a little until you hit the stall point.

If you flash the converter (floor it and catch the converter by surprise), your engine should just about hit the stall point rpm and then the converter will catch, similar to popping the clutch on a manual.

But if you're just cruising around, the car will start moving without having to hit the stall rpm first.

the stall speed is a measurement of at what rpm a engine's torque gets transferred to the transmission. you can either brake stall(hold gas and brake at the same time) ot get just below the stall rpm and then launch, or flash stall(jump on the accelerator and catch the converter by suprise) and hit the stall rpm before power is transferred to the rear wheels. Stall rpm is dependent on many factors. torque band, transmission gears, rear gears, vehicle weight, size of the converter, converter design, ect. Lock-up is a feature that allows the engine and transmission to mesh mechanically while cruising. Normally, a torque converter has a certain amount of slip in it(meaning the engine is spinning faster than the transmission) since it is a hydraulic connection. newer converters have a built-in lock-up feature allowing the car to get better gas mileage as long as your speed is fairly constant. Our cars lock-up in 3rd and 4th gears, dropping rpm's on average 300-500 rpm's.

            In simplest terms:

A torque converter links the engine to the transmission. Basically, the torque converter is like the clutch on a manual transmission, whatever stall the converter is set at determines the speed of the engine when the converter allows linkage to the transmission. The more torque the engine can build up before it is put into gear, the better accleration the car will have. Torque converters also multiply engine torque by means of redirecting oil flow. They can multiply engine torque from 1.x - 3.x
