  • Tranny gone :(

Well, I got a '98. Anyone else take their '98s in yet for their first tranny replacement? Mine just hit about 80k miles and went out with quite a bang and loud grinding sounds, I thought it dropped on the road, heh. Hey, whatever, as long as its still under warranty.

Question though, think they'll put the newer 3.42 rear end with the limited slip differential on it, or do they even still make the old '98 tranny anymore? How long am I gonna have to be driving around a POS loaner, too ya'll think before they put a new tranny in. Not having my bird sux. I can't mac on tha h0z. :(

    I'm a little confused.

Your transmission is broken or your rear end?

The rear end is where the 3.42's go with the limited slip differential.

The transmission is what connects to the engine.

A driveshaft connect the end of the transmission to the rear end.

nono, I was wondering if they would put the 3.42 transmission in if they replace mine. And wondering how long a car is usually in for transmission work if its gone.

what they're trying to say is there is only one transmission whether it's for the 3.42 rearend or the 2.73. the gears and limited slip are housed in a completely different unit not dependent on transmission.
i was swimming in the carribean. animals were hiding behind the rocks except for the little fish, but they told me the squid\'s trying to talk to me. oink, oink. where is my mind?

Re read my post before yours.

            You are still confused.

There is no 3.42 transmission. There is a 4L60E transmission which you have. There also is a rear end gear wich yours might be 3.42 or 3.08.

The rear end and transmission are unrelated pieces.

            Enter..... the twilight zone....

dunno, we'll find out though, my 98 went in Friday, and it's now tuesday and they just told me yesterday evening that they were going to tear it down, which means they still have to decide what's wrong with it, have the insurance inspector come out and look at it, then get the parts, and then put it back togather, then put it back in the car.. i'll prolly be without a car for awhile. :(

Just got the diagnosis on my tranny. they said that one of the clutch packs exploded. they are going to put a GM reman in it.. Guess it's better than a kick in the crotch. But i won't have my car back until Thursday at the earliest. :(

My tranny went out soon as I hit 40k. Its a 5 speed and its a '98. So warranty replaced it and I got a new one.

went and looked at my tranny today, they guy had it on the bench, it was really worn out. It kinda makes me wonder about the rest of the car. They are gonna replace it with a GM reman.. ( i think i said that in my other post..) oh well.
