what gears do I have?

I have a 99 firebird 3.8. with the y87 performace package. I had the factory dual exauhst, and 235 55 16 tires and i have a limited slip, and i herd the y87 package had 342 gears but i have also herd the v6 had 308's does any one know what i may have or how i can find out?

A4 V6s have 3.08s unless they've got the Y87 package, in which case it's 3.42s.

M5 V6s have 3.23s no matter what.


To find out for sure, check the RPO codes on your door:
GU4 AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
GU5 AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO

Kinda off topic, butI dont have the y87 package and plan on 3.73's, i have a gu4 on the door but a gu5 code checked under the center console. I'm sure i have 3.08's, just found it odd.

I changed my diff fluid last weekend and saw "3.42" stamped on the gear.

No, you saw 13-42. That's the number of teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear. 42/13 just happens to equal 3.23. ;)

I also have the GU4 on the door and want 3.73s. Is there anything special that I need to know about going from 3.08s to 3.73s?

You'll need a new differential and a new abs reluctor ring.

Dang, 60 bucks for the reluctor ring and 70 for the install kit. Plus the 3.73 and LSD (which I wanted to get anyway). Sounds like a summer project to me... [img]smile.gif[/img]

mine has 3.42 and i dont have the y87 package and my door says gu6 im happy not to rub it in or anything lol but was thinking of jumping to 3.73 will i notice a diffrence
