  • will a 3-series posi fit a 3.08 car??

hey, I was looking around on eBay and saw a gm posi-unit for good price. It says it's a 3-series 10-bolt one. I have 3.08 gears on my auto right now, and I know those are a 2-series differential. I plan on getting gears over the summer and figured it couldnt hurt to get some of the parts now. Will getting the 3-series posi give me a 3-series differential?? I'm really new to this whole gear thing, so I was just wondering if that would fit properly before shelling out the cash. If it helps I'm debating on going up to 3.42's or 3.73's, still not sure, but those are the size gears I want to get. thanks for the help!

Pretty sure it wont because 3:08 are 2 series gears. so if you get a 3 series lsd you have to get 3 series gears...ie 3:23 3:42 so on, which if you do any racing at all you know 3:08's suck, I hate mine, switchin as soon as slp gets its lsd in.

That what I was planning on getting it for. My question was since I have 3.08's now, would my carrier hold it? I was planning on installing it with some 3.42's over the summer with it, just wanted to buy some parts now rather then shell all my hard earned college kid money at once, ya know? So I wasn't going to use it with current gears, just buy it and save to put on with the new gears. The auction just jumped to over $100 though now, so I think I'll just buy one of the SLP Zexel units. I just wanted to make sure all the parts would fit in the end since I'm just starting to learn about all this stuff. Thanks for the reply though! And yeah, the 3.08's do suck! My car sounds so loud and mean, but then it's just not moving, I can't wait to get some gears to help it move quicker over the summer and back up the sound.
