• Lightweight flywheel?

Does anyone know if they make lightweight alum flywheels for our cars?
    Thanks,
JAM
02 Firebird GT

I think Star spec can modifie your stock flywheel and shave off some weight. Last I heard they were charging $150 for this. Maybe some other boar members have more info.

Sweet! Do you happen to know how many teeth ours have? I know some companies like hays makes aluminum flywheels weigh around 15lbs. Anything like that out there for our cars?

Nobody makes an aftermarket lightweight flywheel for our cars, but as stated above, SPEC will lighten it for you for $150. I am a distributor for SPEC and I called a few days ago to confirm this and that said it was true. I don't know how mcuh weight is shaved off of it, but it's supposed to be pretty significant.

When Spec shaves weight off the current flywheel does it affect the strenght of it in anyway?

Yes, but not in any way that will effect you. Only if you were throwing 600 Hp at it which I don't see us doing. SPEC is a very reputable company and they definitely know what they're doing. If making your flywheel lighter would sacrafice too much strength, I am sure that they wouldn't do it.

I have a stock flywheel that has been lightened by SPEC. I don't know of anyone else thats had it done (on a v6 fbody) and I know mine was the first that SPEC did. They didn't get to take off as much as they wanted because they found that the flywheel has a natural imbalance (probably a reason nobody makes an aftermarket flywheel for us). I weighed the two separately. I don't remember the exact weights but I believe the shaved flywheel was about 6 lbs lighter than stock. That may not sound like much but it goes a long way in that part of the drivetrain. Below is a pic of the lightened flywheel mounted. You can see the sections taken out on the edges. I also threw in a pic of the stock flywheel.

I've always been told not to touch the flywheel because the engine is balenced perfectly and any changes like that mess things up more than help.

Too light of a flywheel makes shifting normally (letting off the gas) without stalling into the next gear almost impossible... Drag racing isnt as easy either - but accelerating in gear is a whole lot faster with a lighter flywheel.

Keep in mind 6lbs isn't enough to make a dramatic difference, but it will help, and when I replace my clutch I'm planning on lightening mine if possible. Seems like a great deal, and 6lbs isn't enough to affect driveability I don't believe.
