  • Changing transmission fluid have same effect like with autos

Hi, I have searched this forum and couldnt find an answer to my particular question. Does changing manual tranny fluid with 130,000 miles have the same effect as with an auto with 130,000. I dont want my 5 speed tranny to crap out because the new fluid eats up seals and stuff. I have a slight roughness feeling, that kinda feels like grinding, buts its not. Do you think changing the fluid could solve that or its jus normal for 130,000 miles. Thanks Also if you could recomend a fluid that wont be too hard on my tranny and tell me which ones to avoid that would be great.

It's recommended to change your fluid periodically. New fluid doesn't hurt anything, I've done mine several times, over 160k miles now. In fact, if your fluid level is low it can give you that rough feeling when shifting.

The stuff I've been putting in is made by Quakerstate, it's a synthetic ATF they advertise for 4x4 and other extreme duty. But any Dexron III will work.

Hey again, I have changed the fluid with standard stuff (just the regular dexron 3 fluid nothing fancy) The fluid in there was dirty but nothing major, now it is topped up with nice clean fluid. The slight roughness problem is still there. Im thinking it could be worn syncros but i can get the roughness feeling with the car on or off so does that rule that out? Could it just be a worn stock shifter? Thats all I can think of right now.

BEst bet is, drain the fluid, put new fluid in, and if you still have issues its a good chance your syncrhros are wearing out.

There are transmission restoration additives I suppose you could try. I'm not sure if they actually help as I've never used them.

I try to change my trans fluid at every 50k miles or so. I've never used any additives, I just kept up with the fluid changes and it's been fine.

I also change the rear diff fluid when I'm flushing the trans fluid. I know I can get MANY more miles out of the rear fluid, but it's just peace-of-mind for me.

The only thing thats pushing me away from the syncros is that I can get the same feeling with the car off and not moving by shifting. Once i shift tho it will go in nice and smooth every gear( remember the car is off and im not moving) in order to get the roughness feeling back I have to let the clutch out and push it back in then it will be rough going into the gear only on the first time after I let the clutch out and push it back in. When Im shifting I Always have the clutch in. any other thoughts
