• Crazy noise coming from rear diff.

I was driving the other day and noticed a new noise coming from my car. I have a 5 speed V6 3.8. Its a rotating/churning noise it increases and decreases with acceleration. even when i role in neutral i hear the same noise as it is in gear. AT 65 in 5th it is louder than the radio. A buddy of mine said it might be my gears going bad? What do you think. It is coming from the rear. I also had a new clutch put in about a month ago. Thanks Coleman

Do you have a limited slip?
Have you changed your diff fluid recently?

I would recommend starting with a differential fluid change. Go with a good synthetic, I think Valvoline makes some. When you pull the diff cover off see if you have significant metal flake inside the housing. If you do you're grinding gears. See a mechanic.

I checked tranny and diff. fluids are fine. The mechanic said my carrier bearings are going bad. This was kind of conveinent because i was replacing the differential and gears next week anyways. I am going with the Zexel-Torsen Limited Slip and GM 3.73 gears. So far it looks like http://www.tbyrne.com has the best prices on all this. Thanks for all the help.
P.s. A gm mechanic wants to charge me 150 to put all that in, is that a good price???

I had a ring side carrier bearing go out, put in an Auburn posi for the time being while I was in there. It is easy, you can do it yourself, no special tools needed other than a torque wrench and muscle and sweat.

Go here...great instructions.

So how easy is this really. I feel comfortable doing almost anything with some guideance. I am tempted to try it, but also scared i might F$$$ something up at the same time. I have read that page a couple of times. What about this ABS reluctor ring will i need a new one? LSD additive will i need that too.? A lot of people tell me if you dont line everything up right you could mess something up. Thanks for all the help guys and gals

The hardest part is putting the new diff. back in, the instructions listed on that website are very accurate. He put in an Auburn, you will be putting in a Zexel, not really that much difference. The Zex uses a blocking plate to keep the axles from coming in and dropping the C clips, the Auburn uses a pin. You have an M5 and will not need a new reluctor ring, just be careful when taking the old one off and putting it back on. Tighten the ring bolts up evenly and keep the reluctor ring going on straight and it will be fine.

It is a messy and smelly job, but not a hard one. I hadn't touched a wrench in many years before putting mine in, I had no problems with the differential install.

POWER TOOLs to make it EASIER.
A LIFT to make it even more EASIER.
You don't need a new reluctor ring if you're careful with the old one. Make sure it all line up and straight when you bolt it up to the LSD one.
