F41 is the base suspension package for the F-body...nothing special.

You'll need to swap from a series II to a series III carrier, I believe, get a different ring & pinion (for whatever gears you want to use), and while you're at it, might as well go ahead and add a posi to that list.

Ya, I had the 3:08's in mine also. I swapped them for 3:73's and an Auburn Posi. WORLD of difference man!!!! I got the gears at Thunder Racing for $199 and the Auburn at R&E Racing for like $300. The labor was $175. It's nice to be able to kick it out sideways com'n out of the parking lot.

basically have the same car as you. get some gm superior 3.73 gears for 290 or find them used, which how i got mine, they are WAY better than 3.08. Install is around 300.

Hey, I have a quick side question....I now have 3.23s in my car now and was thinking of upgrading to 3.73s. Will I notice a good difference or what? I was stupid and bought some 3.42s thinking I had 3.08s but found out that I have 3.23s so I may just get rid of them for better ones, 3.73 maybe.

if ya done have a LSD rear, u can never kick it sideways?

Cause not always, but like 90% of the time if i wanna be an a$$ i cant go completely sideways, or do a donut even(not recommended)

If you have an A4, i can put money u have 3.08's..i havent heard of an A4 w/ 3.23's but then again i could be wrong...thought they only came on M5's

you'll notice a difference w/ the 3.42's, but of course the 3.73's will be quicker.

If you want 3.42's, i'd just advise u to drop in a new rear end off a TA or Camaro or something. People have been tellin me its a lot cheaper.

Also if you get them installed by a sh*tty place, their going to wine all the time, i heard some horror stories.

Do a few searches on the board and see what you come up w/.

i am in the same position you are in Black 97, I have a Silver 97 m5 with the 3.08's. I have been looking around for 3.73's and i will most likely get them from either slp, or a place called speed automotive. For everything from slp it will be like 450 with shipping. A little cheaper from the other place, but slp is who the general contracted to make firehawks, ta's, and SS Camaro's...and if it is good enough for the general, then it is good enough for me!

                         good luck in your search.

I'm getting hooked up! Today a friend was riding in my back seat and noticed some whining coming from my stock rear end. I talked to my mechanic friend, who works at the place where I bought my car, and he said if I can get the 3.42's, he'll put them in instead of regular 3.23's. I found the gears out of a 97 SS, for $30! So instead of 150 bucks labor for him to do it on the side, he's gonna oput the gears in and all as a warranty! I just have to get my SLP LSD first so he can secretly slip it in at the same time! I am stoked! I just have to get the VIN off a Y87 car, so he can re=program my computer to think it's that car, and I won't have to buy a chip or programemr for a while.

I might be wrong but if you were to add a zexel-torsen lsd then that in itself is a series III carrier, right? so all you need is the 3.42 ring and pinion (pay between 100-130 for them used) and a take-off lsd from slp for 100, then labor will be in the 200 range, so about 400-450 total. I can't wait to get mine in, i have the gears and the lsd is in the mail. goodbye 2.3X 60 fts!!
