    Rear Gears

    I'm not sure what gears I have in my car.. I'm pretty sure that I don't have the Y87 package because it doesn't say that on my window sticker (would it say it there??) I would like to know if anyone could tell me what my 97 auto coupe has as far as rear gears go that and also would it be a worthwhile thing to get 3.42's on there so I can do a little better off the line (my friend with a bird beat me last night and i'm itching for revenge)? Also I went to gmpartsdirect.com to look for the stock ones but I could not find them so a little help there please.. Also.. what kind of shop would install those and/or do they even install them? Any help on rear gear knowledge is appreciated... thanks guys

    Also what is an LSD? and how do I get one/put it on?

      Ok this should be in Drivetrain.

      On the gears chances are you have 3.08s. Check the sticker on the door.
      GU4 3.08
      GU5 3.23
      GU6 3.42

      On the LSD what it does is equally transfer power to both wheels therefore giving you better traction off the line.

        So where can I get these GU6 ones (3.42) ... (I checked and I have the GU4) I went to gmdirectparts but they didn't have it or said that it wasn't listed... that and where can I get the limited slip differential

          go to the drivetrain searches and look. you'll find pages of info about this. you'll also find pages of info about what you need to install them, where to get it done, and prices for parts/install.

          gears are a pretty big issue on this board, most people among the drivetrain section can tell you anything you want to know about them, so feel free to ask if you need to. but the basic stuff like "where to get gears" is like asking us how to change your oil, it's kind of a dumb question. look around and you'll probably get everything you need to know.
