My friend has a 56' Nomad with 4.11 gears in it. I was wondering if they would work in my car, or would my engine give out from being pushed too hard, what about 3.80 instead? Also, I was wondering if I got a rear end of a z28 and put it in, would I have to redo my exhaust? The welding and all?

you won't wear out the engine too fast, but you won't get very good mileage on the highway. a few guys on here run w/ them on their cars and they have a few problems w/ traction and highway mileage. I'd get 3.73's. 3.42's are the best balanced gears for street/highway, but 3.73's will get you a better 1/4 time overall.

4.11s aren't even for the fbod--if you are talking about 4.10s, they might work on your car, but i wouldn't count on 1956 gears to work on your car at all. and if they do work, i would be very, VERY scared of the noises they would make :(

GM only goes up as high as 3.42's for the Fbodies. I'd recommend these. I'd also only go with real GM gears (not just ones with a 'blah blah blah GM blah' name.

3.42s aren't too expensive either.

Actually you can go higher than 3.42's. I met a fellow board member (DOM) and he has 4.10's in his 1996 Camaro.

Well all he has done is an exhaust and he took me for a ride. MAN was it haulin @$$. For not even an intake, it would kill anyone off the line. I got pushed back in the seat. Problem is that the speedo was off big time (he say's 18%)

I dont know if anyone has gone higher than 4.10's, but who know's whats going to happen in the future

I never said that you can't go higher than 3.42's, only that you can't get anything higher from the dealership parts depts.

Check out http://www.ls1info.com/article.php?sid=159 for some more info on the topic. This might help you in your decision.

Actually 4.11 is for the F-Body. I have them, the ring teeth count is 37, the pinion teeth count is 9.

37/9 = 4.11

I had 4 10's
342's
323's
and 308's
For my car 323's worked the best
410's sucked!!!!!!
342's were an all around great gear

Did DOM say what his gas mileage was? Was it a 3.8 v6?
