  • Clutch depressed...weird whining noise.

A few months ago this noise developed on my car. When I depress the clutch there is a whining noise kind of like when you know your power steering pump has gone bad. When you release the pedal the sound goes away.

Also when I am in 5th gear for like 20 minutes a funny whine vibrates through the shifter.

    Any suggestions?

Is it usually right when you press the pedal in? or does it happen with the clutch in and in gear?
sounds like the TO bearing to me too, possibly the pilot bearing.

Id say if there's vibrations coming up through your shifter, you should take a look at your tranny mount. And if it is your TO bearing, just get a whole new clutch kit and a new slave cylinder. It'd suck to pull it all apart and put it back together, just do do it again in a few months because the clutch went out. Oh yeah, don't get a pilot bearing if you replace the clutch kit. Get a pilot bushing. Its more better.

it is possible that it could also be the master cylinder. if it only makes the noise while the car is stopped clutch pressed in and in gear then its the master. if not look to the throw out bearing if the clutch is pressed in and the car is in neutral.

It happens when the clutch is pushed in to the floor.

It makes the sound whether in neutral or in gear, just as long as the clutch is pushed to the floor.

Yep. Either TOB or Pilot. Mine was doing it before I replaced the clutch, replaced all the components, and it stopped.

Thank you very much. Now the question is, will it ever cause a serious problem? My clutch is still working fine, so would rather live with the noise if I can.

eventually it will get worse and eventually fail on you. I have had it happen.

replace it before it leaves you stranded

To counter his point, I had mine doing it off and on for 8 months before it got serious enough that I replaced it, and I get a feeling mine was the pilot.

                            What happens when it fails?
