  • question on gear oil and trans fluid....

i tried looking up this info, but could not find an answer...

what weight gear oil do our cars need? 75w90? and how much, two quarts?

and how many bottles of trans fluid is needed? one quart?

    i have a 96 y87 with a t5

I searched a bit for this myself and never came up with a definite answer.
    Here is my guess though:
T5 tranny probably holds somewhere between 3 and 5 quarts of Dexron ATF.
Diff is probably 80/90 and probably holds 2 to 3 quarts.
Don't forget to add the friction additive to the diff since you have the Y87.

If anyone else knows different, please chime in.

You're right about the gear oil. 75/90 is what I've used, and it is 2 quarts.

use the auto and light trucks look up on the side, put in the camaro and you will pull up everything you need, a link to it, and how much of everything you need.

sign up as a P.C customer for them for 6 months and you'll save 20-25% off of the retail prices...you can pick up the stuff for free depending on where they are, or have it shipped for pretty cheap.

let me know if you need any info, this is where I get all my oil from ;)

fill the diff and the trans until fluid comes out of the fill hole, dont just put x amount of fluid in

I just had to fill the diff Monday, it took me a little less than 2 qts - but the way the car was jacked it may not have been completely empty (I had to drain it to replace an axle bearing/seal - the fluid wasn't that old). I had a heck of a time finding info on the diff capacity - neither the owner's manual not the Hanyes manual had it (I finally found it in a post here). I thought both books had the transmission capacity listed though?
