  • Broken Bolt

I broke a flywheel to crankshaft bolt in the crank I have been trying to remove it with no success. I was drilling a pilot hole for the bolt extractor and the drill bit broke. My question is will the remaining 7 bolts do the job or should I keep on trying to remove the broken bolt?

instead of using bolt extractors, use bolt outs.. this is assuming there is still some of the thread left for you to grab on to.

i would not suggest leaving the broken bolt in there.

just drill the entire bolt out...just be careful. just re-tap it

yeahh, it sucks but that is the final fix route, you don't want to be driving a car that is a few bolts shy of complete....lol...If the bit is stuck in there, you can pick up a diamond tipped carbide steel attachment set for a dremel and you kindof have to pick at it till it comes out. Try looking for some reverse drill bits though, sometimes the bolt will extract itself when you are drilling.

I'll see if I can find any reverse drill bits if not I'm just going to drill it and tap it

you could try welding a nut to it.

Its in to deep in the hole to weld a nut to it

Remove the rest of the bolts, remove flywheel. After the flywheel is off you should be able to get visegrips on the broken bolt.

                    Re: Broken Bolt

I already drilled it so there is nothing to grip on

I have to agree with above just drill and retap the hole. Did you get all the broken bit out?

                        Re: Broken Bolt

I already took out the broken bit. Now I just have to drill the rest of the bolt up.

I'd still try to remove it hole... get an easy out in it, soak it in penetrant for a day or so, and maybe put a torch on the crank....

be careful not to burn yourself or start a fire.

                          then try the easy out....

drilling/tapping is good and all, but I would be weary doing it on the crank or anything in the drivtrain that spins, you might through it out of balance and give yourself a ****ty vibration later.

I've actually seen people use heat to extract them and they say its' easy. I'll see if I can find a torch so i can do that. if it doesn't work I'll drill and tap it.

I mean with rear main seal close I wouldn't go to crazy... Just remember cold shrinks, heat expands...

set up ez out, heat the crank around the bolt some then try to extract it.
