  • Rear End Suggestion Which do i choose?

The rear end that is in a '96, providing mine is the 3 point ABS. with Motion genuine GM 3:42's or the other 3.73's installed into it with the Auburn that's in it for $450

    or

Gear of my choice (3.42/3.73/4.10), the SLP Torsen posi, and pay for the installation into my car at This trans place for $450 total

In either case a deposit would be required beforehand, but either is doable. In either case i would be responsible for supplying the gear oil/additive

So it's 1) Swap in a 1996 rear end with either Motion genuine GM 3:42's or 3.73's + Auburn for $450, or 2) Stay with your current rear end and get the shop to install your gear of choice + SLP Torsen posi for $450?

If I'm understanding correctly, why not #2? It sounds like that would be a lot less work, unless you want to do the complete rear-end swap just for the experience of it.

Does the Torsen make sense in the long run though?

Honestly, I don't know about the differences with those 2 differentials (but that doesn't mean there aren't any). Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will chip in...
But in my uneducated opinion, Ya that makes sense

Depends on what gear ratio you want and what type of differential you want...

Obviously, the gears you want are going to depend on the type of driving you do and what all you use the car for.

Differential-wise... Torsen is a helical limited slip, which uses worm gears that act as an open diff until a certain amount of resistance (torque) is applied in a driving situation, where it acts as a true limited slip differential and powers both wheels. The upside of the Torsen differential is that it doesn't receive as much wear and tear as a clutch-type, but is much harder to rebuild if you do break or wear out something. Helicals are also much more susceptible to "shock" damage.

Clutch-type differentials like the Auburn are rebuildable and can handle more of a "shock" factor. They do tend to wear down at a faster rate, but can handle more power.

both will be fine for your application, just your choice. If your staying bolt ons might wanna look into 3.73s

That shock damage kinda scares me to be honest lol.

Idunno... I'm running full bolt-ons with a 3.73 Torsen and am quite pleased so far. I beat this car like it owes me money too.

As for as power increasing bolt-ons, the usual free ram air, whisper lid, ZZP ER rockers, pacesetter headers, 3" catback. I also have the suspension work assisting the hook-up.

                        Pot holes? I avoid them.

Shock damage won't be a problem until you're using some short gears (4.10s), sticky tires, and a good-sized shot off the line. That or doing clutch dumps. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it on an NA street car. I was just giving a little more info about the differentials.

Thinking im going with the torsen actually.. with the install might even get some sort of warranty, now its just for the gear selection..
