  • Difficult time with gear ratio

for some reason, i suck at searching for things...

i'm sure this has been asked before, but i'm trying to find out what my gear ratio is.

    i have a 2000 3.8L v6 firebird vert A4.

i read that there's 2 different types of A4's...i don't know which one i have or how to find out.

is there somewhere on the car that tells you what the ratio is? i've seen several options that came on these, and i don't know how to tell.

i'm changing my tire height and i was told that i'll need to change the gear ratio in my hypertech power programmer III. i'm confused on this. i emailed hypertech (not heard back yet) but i figured i would ask you guys too.

    thanks.

Re: Difficult time with gear ratio

if youre talking rear end ratio look in your glovebox at the RPO codes. find these...GU1 AXLE REAR, 2.41 RATIO
    N/A

    GU2 AXLE REAR, 2.73 RATIO
    N/A

    GU4 AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
    N/A

    GU5 AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
    N/A

    GU6 AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO

you probably have 3.08s or 3.42 ratio. my camaro came with 3.23 gears because most stick shift cars came with them. and most autos came with 3.08. to my knowledge anyways

it's on the driver side door. you have an 02 bird right? it's on a sticker with a bunch of other RPO codes near the sticker that says the tire pressure, etc

Re: Difficult time with gear ratio

i thought it would be and checked there too, but didn't see anything. i figured i'm missing something and checked again and found it. i just happened to skip over that particular code....there's a lot of them on that little sticker!

with all the other 3-character codes, i found the one that says "GU6", so that means i have the 3.42 ratio.

            thanks for the help.
if i put a 285/35/19 on the rear, how does that change things?
(i'm probably going with a 245/40/18 in front)

            thanks again.
