  • Autocrossed the Camaro.

So the car club here at New Mexico Tech just hosted our 2nd autocross this school year and I participated. I found that my new ginormous wheel/tire setup likes teh fast turns. This course was a kinda weird one because we used a road...so it was a pretty linear, fast course.

My current suspension mods are: KYB adjustable shocks (8 rear/7 front), hyperco hypercoil springs, and the bigazz tires. Unfortunately the wheel size put me in the SM division, so I didn't end up being too competitive against the WRXes and Jettas with full race suspensions and slicks in my division... (lol)

But I still did pretty good overall. When I get the time charts I'll post 'em up.

We had a couple really good photographers there this time and I got some decent pictures. I'm also gonna try and add some GIFs I made in a bit. I also got to run the camera pod on one of my runs. If I get ahold of the video I'll upload that too.

            Yeah that was me driving.

SilverRS96, I will have at least one vid in a week or so when I can talk to the guy who has the club camera. I got one run recorded with our car pod and there were some other people out there with video cameras.

And we don't live BY a desert...we live IN the desert. ;)

Cool! I've never seen an autocross on a random road either. I really like those pictures with the mountains and desert in the background.

That's pretty cool for being limited to such a narrow course!

Yep, swaybars are my next suspension mod on the list. I'm still trying to decide what would work best with my KYBs...I might do 22/32 I think.

If you look at..like the 3rd picture you can see the turnaround we used. The course was about 1/2 mile long total. We used the road because it's a little used road used by EMRTC (university explosives facility) for their trucks...we don't have many good parking lots at our school.

And yeah...I <3 my rugged New Mexico scenery. :)

What about 35/22 for the swaybars instead of 32/22...

                              Re: Autocrossed the Camaro.

Well with the design of the 4th gen camaro front suspension there is hardly any droop/rebound movement. Since the front bar really has the biggest impact on body roll control and going big with the 4th Gen camaro front swaybar hardly adds any understeer to the setup, you can go pretty large on the front bar to help reduce body roll and set the chassis.

My stripped out camaro (3240lbs with a full tank) is setup with the 36.7mm front/25mm rear Hotchkis Hollow Sport bars and SA Koni Sport shocks and still has a little body roll (probably due to the stock springs.) If i was keeping the car I'd probably change the rear bar down to 22mm and see how it feels, but the 25mm bar has been stable at autocrosses and on roadcourses with no real traction issue (since it's a stock 3800 V6 and the tires are wide sticky DOT R compounds).

Here's a good thread on front anti-roll bars: F-Body Road Racing and Autocross thread on 32-35mm front swaybars
