• Tires?

I have been racing in the SCCA solo II autocross, and I am quickly wasting away the stock goodyear P235/55R16's that came with the car. I drive this car to work and school in good weather and bad... winter or summer. are there any tires that can put up with public road abuse and still have good race characteristics? What about BFG KDW's or Nitto 555r's? Can I upgrade sizes? I was contemplating steping up to 255/50r16's. Will these be too far off from my stock size and mess up the speedometer?

There are a ton. if you're wearing out the eagle GAs quickly, I did, then please abuse... er use the 45,000 mile warranty to your advantage. With the warranty I purchased (4) Yokohama ES100 P245/50R16s (which autocross extremely well) for $27/tire :-D

I don't know about the BFG's. I know people like the Nitto's (f-body people who drag race mostly, and autocross once in a while).

I recently got Goodyear F1's (the new GS-D3) and they've been a great all-around tire.

I took .2 off my 60' times drag racing with them.

I took 3-4 seconds off my autocross times with them.

They are the best tires in the rain that I have ever owned, period. (that's in over 20 years of driving...)

So far, the wear is good. I've had them about a month and a half, so it's still kind of early to tell. I have two autocross events on them, 7 runs each event. One trip to the dragstrip, 5 nitrous passes. Less than 2000 miles on the street so far.

I would check a site like tirerack.com for sizes that fit a stock 8" wheel.

I would check one of the online tire size calculators for diameters of different tires, and get one as close as possible to your current size. An internet search for "tire size calculator" will give you a bunch of hits.

You may want to doublecheck size restrictions depending on what class you are running in. Off the top of my head, I think any change will push you out of GS. STX is the next place up, and they have a 245mm limit (which is what I'm running, on 18's). Next up would be ESP, which I believe is unlimited on tire sizes.

Kumho (V700 I believe) seem to be popular in my region on GM cars.

Where did you get tires for that price. I looked for almost a month and the cheapest I found were around $80 or something.

Read: Warranty replacement

45,000 mile warranty on Goodyear GAs. I only got 10,000 out of mine. They paid me $100/tire in reimbursement when I got new tires.

I've done it 3x btw, on 3 different Fbodies.

My tires are out of warranty. they have 56000 miles on them. I just got a quote for 245/50/16 BFG g force KDW's at $600 installed and balanced. How does the Camaro council feel about these tires? is that a rip?

Get some 711's and call it a day. $56 each, $250 to the door, $300 mounted out the door. Tirerack + local shop. Life is good.

Are they 712's? No. KD's? No. KDW's? No. F1's? No. 555RII's? No. But they're $56 each, eat me. Good enough all around tire for me. (Autocross mainly, starting to drag race)

What are 711's? who makes them? Is there an web site to find out more about them? I go to college in a small redneck kansas town. One tireshop had never heard of Nitto tires. I won't be able to get a tire that is not mainstream. That is one reason I wanted BFG's. Still, I would love to pay $56 for a grippy, street/autocross tire.

Kumho, and the Kumho 711s are very good tires and are very inexpensive. If I get another set of tires on my 16's, I will be installing them.

If I were you, I would get myself a nice set of all weather tires and an extra set of wheels with either Nittos (not dr, autocross) or Kumhos (Victoracers) on them for autocross use only. That way you don't wear down your stock tires fast, plus you'll have great grip on the course. My friend does that and drives to events on Kumho Victoracers and loves them.

Kumho 711's are horrible on on the courses. Soon as they get hot, you might as well be driving on jello. I'm currently looking at some Falken Azenis at 245/45/16.

I really like my potenza re730's for auto-X..
they are way better then the 711/712's but.. they cost alot more!

if you want a stricyly auto-x tire the victoracers are great..

if you are looking for something for street/auto-x i would get the re730's if you have the cash..

if you want some thing "ok" but cheep.. get the 711/712's..

I ordered 711's this morning. I wanted BFG KDW's, but the guy I bought them from races with me and said my rookie driving style is not good enough to notice the difference between 711's and KDW's. He told me to use the money I save and go to Evolution driving school; it would be better spent there.

SilverTAWS6- I would love to get a second set of race only wheels, but I am in college. In buying new tires as it is, I have already condemned myself to only consuming bread and water for the next month. :D
